    The Charlie Kirk Shooting: What It Reveals About Protective Security The tragic killing of Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University forces us to ask difficult but necessary questions about how we approach protective security within the United States, Canada and beyond. This was not a chaotic rush-the-stage scenario. Early reports suggest a single shot fired from an elevated, external position—a rooftop line of sight into an open forum. This is a textbook example of a standoff attack vector long recognized in protective operations. So what does this incident teach us? 🔹 Predictable? Strategically, yes. In today’s polarized climate, public figures—especially those with announced campus appearances—are high-risk targets. Elevated sightlines and open venues are well-documented vulnerabilities. 🔹 Preventable? Not with absolute certainty. But risk could have been mitigated through proven measures: • Indoor venue selection with controlled perimeters • Secured and monitored roof access • Overwatch and counter-sniper coverage • Ballistic stagecraft (backdrops, lecterns, occlusion of long sightlines) • Unified command between venue, local police, and protective detail 🔹 Responsibility? • The institution (UVU): Did roof hatches, access controls, and building perimeters meet the required standard for a controversial, high-profile event? • The protective unit: Did they push back on venue choice, conduct elevation sweeps, and secure overwatch? Or did they accept risk that should have been mitigated? ⸻ Lessons for the field 1. Venue drives risk. If you can’t control the perimeter and elevation, the venue isn’t suitable for high-threat principals. 2. Shared responsibility. Universities, private security, and local/federal agencies must align under a unified plan. 3. Protective intelligence matters. Social media monitoring, tip vetting, and advance indicators can shift risk management from reactive to proactive. 4. Ballistic awareness. Protective work is no longer just about close-in threats. Long-range and standoff attacks must be part of the planning baseline. ⸻ 👉 My question to peers in security, law enforcement, and emergency management: How do we evolve protective protocols for open, civic, and campus environments—where access control will always be partial—to realistically address standoff threats without shutting down democratic engagement?

The Unseen Threats Facing Leaders In an increasingly unpredictable world, corporate leaders and high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) have become prime targets for various adversaries—nation-state actors, corporate spies, militant organizations, and criminal opportunists. These threats are no longer hypothetical but active, sophisticated, and evolving daily. Executives sit at the intersection of influence, wealth, and visibility. Yet far too often, security measures lag behind the prominence and value of these individuals. Many need help understanding this: the higher the stakes, the greater the risk. Today’s threats don’t announce themselves—they exploit complacency. Identifying Vulnerabilities: Ignorance is Not an Option The first step to mitigating risk is recognizing it. Vulnerabilities extend beyond physical security to digital footprints, travel habits, and personal networks. Backgrounds are analyzed, movements are tracked, and weak links are exploited. Ignorance of this reality is not a shield—it’s an invitation. Understanding risk requires a thorough and unflinching evaluation: physical assessments, cybersecurity audits, and intelligence monitoring that connect the dots long before a threat becomes a crisis. Mitigating Risks: Security Must Be Embedded, Not Bolted On Security isn’t just another checklist item—it must become part of the operational fabric for leaders. Access control, vetted travel plans, threat intelligence, and contingency strategies are no longer optional. Without them, executives become reactive instead of proactive, gambling with assets that cannot afford to be lost. The reality is stark: without robust, integrated security protocols, a single breach—physical, cyber, or reputational—can unravel decades of work instantly. The disruptions caused by a targeted attack don’t end with the individual; they ripple through organizations, shareholders, and employees. Protecting What Matters: Legacies Aren’t Indestructible Corporate America cannot afford to ignore these risks. The reputations and legacies of leaders, often built over lifetimes, remain fragile in the face of today’s relentless threats. A single oversight can erode hard-earned trust, capital, and market confidence—losses that may never be recovered. For those at the top, the margin for error is nonexistent. Security must match the scale of leaders' responsibility in today’s volatile landscape. Anything less is an avoidable failure. The wake-up call is clear: complacency is not an option. Security is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. For corporate leaders and HNWIs, proactive risk mitigation is the only path forward in a world where the cost of inaction is far too high.
