This pill is hard to swallow: The bitter truth in biotech: brilliant science rarely attracts funding on its own merit. In other words, the most funded projects aren't necessarily the most scientifically groundbreaking; they're the ones that effectively communicate their value. I've been there. Standing in front of senior management, hands shaking, knowing this one pitch would determine if years of research lived or died. We won first place. Everything changed. Here's what nobody tells you: most brilliant scientists can't pitch. Not because they're not smart enough, but because nobody taught them how to translate genius into dollars. The challenges are always the same: - Making complex science simple without dumbing it down - Competing for attention spans shorter than a TikTok video - Turning "interesting research" into "must-have investment" - Overcoming the dreaded "too risky" death sentence Since that pivotal moment, I've made it my mission to help scientists get the funding they deserve. I've spoken at prestigious conferences, hosted the Smart Biotech Scientist podcast, and worked with dozens of researchers who've gone from rejected to funded. The pattern is always identical: brilliant science + compelling story = investment. Most scientists skip the second part. Here's how to fix it: 1. Start with the problem, not the solution. On delivering a great conference presentation. Conference presentations are tricky. Whether your content is good or not, may or may not matter. However. Where it is a good presentation or not will open and close doors on your career. And. A bad one, esp. as a senior PhD student, can close minds and doors on the ejob market. So five quick points to consider as you plan your talk. 1. Structure your talk like a SHORT story You have just 15 to 20 minutes. So use a simple structure to describe your research, like this: Hook – A question, puzzle, or surprising insight Background – What we know, what we don’t Research question – The gap you address Method – How you explored it Key findings – What you discovered Implications – Why it matters for research or practice Example: “We wanted to know why remote teams struggle with onboarding. So we interviewed 22 tech firms. What we found challenges how we think about informal mentorship.” 2. Design slides that focus attention on you. One idea per slide. Keep it visual. Define key terms and highlight relevance. Let your voice do the explaining. Example: Instead of pasting your abstract on a slide, show a graph, a quote, or a concept map. 3. Practice, practice, practice Rehearse with time limits. Ask peers to simulate Q&A. Emulate having people come in and out of the room. Example: If your session is 15 minutes, aim to finish in 12. Have a friend play the "skeptical reviewer" in practice and push back on your logic. 4. Deliver with intention Speak slowly and clearly. Make eye contact. Pause for breath. Think before answering questions. Example: Nervous speakers rush. A short pause after your main point helps your audience absorb it—and makes you sound more confident. 5. Respect the room Visit the room before the talk. Know the room layout. Hook up your computer to present. Bring your slides on a USB stick. Finish 1–2 minutes early. Example: If you’re speaking in a hybrid session, arrive early to check audio levels and screen sharing. Even if you are a great speaker, things go wrong. Most biotech founders don’t fail because their ideas are bad. They fail because their messaging never stood a chance. Not because they didn’t “communicate benefits” clearly. They wrote posts that ignored how people think. As a founder, you’re used to facts, logic, and evidence. But your audience doesn’t read your LinkedIn post like a peer-reviewed paper. They skim. → They filter. → They fill in the blanks. → Then they forget. The Cognitive Bias Codex is one of the best tools I’ve found for writing posts that work with these patterns, rather than against them. Here’s how to apply it: 1️⃣ Catch attention (Too much info): People are overloaded. You need contrast. → Use the bizarreness effect. Start with something unexpected. → Use the Von Restorff effect. Make one idea visually or conceptually stand out. → Use confirmation bias. Start with what your audience believes, then challenge it. 💡 Instead of “Our study shows a 12% increase,” try: “Most device teams think 40% uptake is the limit. Ours hit 52%.” 2️⃣ Build trust (Not enough meaning): People fill gaps with stories. Give them the right one. → Use the narrative bias. Share a decision, failure, or conversation. → Use the halo effect. Mention credible names or data sources. → Break stereotypes. Show something they didn’t expect. 💡 “We thought this device wouldn’t work in elderly patients. It did.” 3️⃣ Prompt action (Need to act fast): Your reader is scrolling. You need to interrupt the autopilot. → Use loss aversion. Show the cost of ignoring your insight. → Use the sunk cost fallacy. Highlight why clinging to outdated methods hurts. → Use the availability heuristic. Reference a recent news item or post. 💡 “Still relying on 2022 data to plan your 2025 trial?” 4️⃣ Boost recall (What do we remember?): You don’t need to be memorable to everyone. Just to the right people. → Use the peak-end rule. Start strong. End clear. → Repeat key phrases. → Tell stories where the smart choice looks obvious in hindsight. 💡 “We bet on the unpopular strategy. It paid off in 3 months.” Most content tries to sound smart. Everyone loves a good story. You should be using your data to tell one every chance you get. The importance of narrative in scientific communication cannot be understated. And that includes communication in traditionally technical environments! One thing that gets beaten into you in graduate school is that a scientific presentation is a technical affair. Communicating science is fact based, it's black and white, here's the data, this is the conclusion, do you have any questions? Actually, I do. Did you think about what story your data could tell before you put your slides together? I know this is a somewhat provocative question because a lot of scientists overlook the importance of telling a story when they present results. But if you want to keep your audience engaged and interested in what you have to say, you should think about your narrative! This is true for a presentation at 'The Mountain Lake Lodge Meeting on Post-Initiation Activities of RNA Polymerases,' the 'ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting,' or to a class of 16 year old AP Biology Students. The narrative doesn't need to be the same for all of those audiences, BUT IT SHOULD EXIST! There is nothing more frustrating to me than seeing someone give a presentation filled with killer data only to watch them blow it by putting the entire audience to sleep with an arcane technical overview of the scientific method. Please. Tell. A. Story. With. Your. Data. Here's how: 1. Plot - the series of events that drive the story forward to its resolution. What sets the scene, the hypothesis or initial observation? How can the data be arranged to create a beginning, middle, and end? 2. Theme - Good vs Evil, Human vs Virus, Day in the life of a microbe? Have fun with this (even just as a thought experiment) because it makes a big difference. 3. Character development - the team, the protein, gene, or model system 4. Conflict - What were the blockers and obstacles? Needed a new technique? Refuting a previous finding? 5. Climax - the height of the struggle. Use your data to build to a climax. How did one question lead to another and how were any problems overcome? 6. Resolution - What's the final overall conclusion and how was the conflict that was setup in the beginning resolved by what you found? By taking the time to work through what story you can tell, you can engage your entire audience and they'll actually remember what you had to say!

You spend months, or even years, building strong research. Then, in the final defense, you unknowingly weaken your own work… because of poor slides. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 A thesis defense is not about showing everything you did. It is about showing that you understand your research deeply, can communicate it clearly, and can defend it confidently. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 1. Title Slide Include your research title, your name, degree program, institution, and supervisor (if required). Keep it clean. No unnecessary graphics. 2. Research Background / Context Briefly establish the problem area. Answer: Why does this research matter? 3. Problem Statement This is one of the most critical slides. Clearly show: → What gap exists? → What issue remains unresolved? → Why does it deserve investigation? 4. Research Aim, Objectives, or Questions Present them clearly and concisely. This slide tells the audience where your research is going. 5. Literature Snapshot / Research Gap Do not overload this slide with 20 citations. Instead, synthesize. Show patterns, contradictions, or missing knowledge. A simple table, framework, or thematic visual often works better than paragraphs. 6. Conceptual or Theoretical Framework Show the lens guiding your study. Make it visually understandable. If you need 5 minutes just to explain your framework, the slide needs redesign. 7. Research Methodology Include only what matters: → Research design → Participants/sample → Data collection methods → Analysis approach → Ethical considerations (briefly, if relevant) 8. Key Findings This is where attention peaks. Use: → Charts → Themes → Models → Comparative visuals → Key evidence Make findings easy to follow. 9. Discussion / Interpretation Show what your findings mean. Connect them back to literature, theory, and your research questions. This is where examiners often assess your depth of thinking. 10. Contributions, Limitations, and Future Work Show academic maturity. No research is perfect, and acknowledging that strengthens your credibility. 11. Conclusion End with clarity. Leave your audience remembering your contribution, not your slide design. When people struggle to understand your words, they assume the problem is you. Not them. You might think complexity makes you sound smarter. It feels necessary. After all, you work in biotech. Precision matters. Accuracy is everything. But research from Princeton professor Daniel Oppenheimer says otherwise. He found something surprising: The more needlessly complex you are, the less intelligent people think you are. You don’t have to dumb things down. You just have to make them clear. Here’s how: 1. Use short sentences. Say what you need to say, then stop. 2. Choose common words. If a seventh grader wouldn’t understand it, reconsider. 3. Explain acronyms. Someone in your audience doesn't know what it means. It takes seconds to tell them. 4. Speak to help, not to impress. Being helpful makes it about them, being impressive makes it about you. 5. Test your message. If someone outside your field doesn’t get it, try again. Because being clear doesn’t mean being simplistic. It means being heard. And in biotech, being heard is how you make an impact.
