    Regardless of how great your ideas are in your virtual sales pitch, webinar, or team meeting… People are most likely checking their email, browsing social media, or working on other things while you present. How can you prevent that and actually get your audience to pay attention? Here are 4 of the most powerful techniques we use for our own virtual training courses: 1. Win the first five seconds According to research from the University of Toronto, people need only five seconds to gauge your charisma and leadership as a speaker. In virtual environments, this first impression is even more critical. To establish instant rapport: - Keep your posture open and inviting (avoid fidgeting, crossed arms, and closed-off postures) - Use open gestures that welcome the audience into your space - Gesture with your palms showing at a 45-degree angle - Speak with clear articulation and energy from the very first word The quickest way to lose your audience? Starting with tentative body language that signals you’re unsure or unprepared. 2. Design your presentation for virtual viewing When designing slides, assume varied viewing conditions. Design for the smallest likely device and the slowest likely Internet speed. Make your slides accessible by: - Using larger fonts (24-32pt) - Applying higher contrast colors - Limiting each slide to ONE clear idea - Adding more space between lines when using smaller text - Stripping excess content (you can provide additional information in a separate document) 3. Vary your delivery Our research shows the optimal length for linear presentations is just 16-30 minutes, while interactive ones can maintain engagement for 30-45 minutes. People’s attention will go through peaks and valleys during that time, so try these techniques to keep their attention: - Vary your speaking pace (faster to convey urgency, slower to express gravity) - Use intentional pauses to let key points land - Adjust your vocal tone (lower pitch for authority, higher for approachability) - Shift between slides, stories, and data at regular intervals Each change helps reset your audience’s attention and signals importance. 4. Build in structured interaction Don’t make your audience wait until the end of your presentation to interact. According to our research, presentations that incorporate audience engagement through polls, chat responses, or breakout discussions maintain attention longer. For the highest engagement: - Use a variety of interaction types throughout your presentation - Incorporate breakout rooms for small-group discussions - Switch modalities regularly to keep it interesting Remember: In virtual environments, you need to recreate the natural engagement that happens in person. Your virtual presentation success isn’t measured by perfection…it’s measured by action.     A lot of time and money goes into corporate training—but not nearly enough comes out of it. In fact, companies spent $130 billion on training last year, yet only 25% of programs measurably improved business performance. Having run countless training workshops, I’ve seen firsthand what makes the difference. Some teams walk away energized and equipped. Others… not so much. If you’re involved in organizing training—whether for a small team or a large department—here’s how to make sure it actually works: ✅ Do your research. Talk to your team. What skills would genuinely help them day-to-day? A few interviews or a quick survey can reveal exactly where to focus. ✅ Start with a solid brief. Give your trainer as much context as possible: goals, audience, skill levels, examples of past work, what’s worked—and what hasn’t. ✅ Don’t shortchange the time. A 90-minute session might inspire, but it won’t transform. For deeper learning and hands-on practice, give it time—ideally 2+ hours or spaced chunks over a few days. ✅ Share real examples. Generic content doesn’t stick. When the trainer sees your actual slides, templates, and challenges, they can tailor the session to hit home. ✅ Choose the right group size. Smaller groups mean better interaction and more personalized support. If you want engagement, resist the temptation to pack the (virtual) room. ✅ Make it matter. Set expectations. Send reminders. And if it’s virtual, cameras on goes a long way toward focus and connection. ✅ Schedule follow-up support. Reinforcement matters. Book a post-session Q&A, office hours, or refresher so people actually use what they’ve learned. ✅ Follow up. Send a quick survey afterward to measure impact and shape the next session. One-off training rarely moves the needle—but a well-planned series can. Helping teams level up their presentation skills is what I do—structure, storytelling, design, and beyond.     Don’t blow your AI adoption plans with poor online training or boring one way videos. If you’re rolling out AI training virtually, your facilitators need more than subject expertise. They need to actually know how to train well online. Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: - Being great in a room doesn’t mean you’re great on Zoom or Teams. - Virtual delivery is a different skillset, a different rhythm, a different way of skill building. - And nothing kills AI confidence faster than a dull, passive virtual session. Strong virtual AI training needs: - Clear structure and tight pacing - High energy facilitation (without being cheesy) - Real interaction, not just breakout rooms or ‘any questions?’ - Smart use of tools, polls and getting tye group to share - A mindset shift from ‘I’m presenting’ to ‘I’m orchestrating’ If you want people to take AI seriously, make sure your trainers can deliver in the environment you’re asking people to learn in.     Congratulations. AI helped you build the course in 10 minutes. Now tell me what happened after learners took it. Here's the problem 👇 The course isn't the product. The behavior change is. And that's where AI gets really interesting. AI is changing Learning & Development faster than any technology I've seen in my career. Yet many conversations still sound like this: "We created that course in 10 minutes." "We used AI to generate the slides." "We built the quiz in seconds." That's impressive. For about five minutes. The real question is: Did anyone learn? Did performance improve? Did behavior change? Did the business get better results? That's where AI becomes truly powerful. The organizations seeing the biggest impact aren't just using AI to create content faster. They're using it to create better learning experiences.     What if universities became the launchpads for 𝐀𝐈-𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭—not just academic hubs? "AI is making students lazy." We hear this a lot. But what if the opposite is true? Used well, AI doesn’t replace learning—it deepens it. It can help students ask better questions, receive instant feedback, unlock personalized pathways, expand access to research, and transition from memorization to curiosity, experimentation, and mastery. This is the shift I’ve been observing across Asia’s education landscape, and it was powerfully echoed at THE Digital Universities Asia 2025, where academic leaders and tech innovators explored how universities can evolve in an AI-powered world. One standout voice: Junfeng Li, VP of Huawei and CEO of Global Public Sector BU. His keynote made a bold case for transformation, backed up with tangible results. Huawei is partnering with universities globally to redesign how students learn, engage, and research in the digital age. Here’s what stood out: 1. From Passive Learning to Active Exploration Smart classrooms aren’t just delivering content faster—they're creating space for personalized, adaptive learning. Zhejiang Shuren University uses AI-driven lesson planning and 24/7 intelligent Q&A—tailoring the experience to students. 2. Every Major Needs Digital Fluency No matter the discipline, students need applied tech skills. Shenyang Institute of Technology integrates real-world enterprise practices into learning. With Huawei, it built 28 industry-aligned labs in 5G, HarmonyOS, AI, etc., cultivating job-ready talents and accelerating education transformation through deepening industry-academic integration.   3. Campuses as hands-on Innovation Hubs At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huawei co-built one of the world’s largest campus innovation hubs. Through diverse practical initiatives, this hub—featuring shared devices, open practice hub, bootcamps, and competition— effectively empowers thousands of students to become innovative and future-oriented talents. Huawei’s “1+3” Intelligent Education Solution also shows how it turns curiosity into capability. •1 Core: Hands-on digital training •3 Scenarios: Smart Classroom, Smart Campus, Research Data Management/Scientific Research   This is not only about future-proofing students. It’s about present-empowering them. To think critically. To build creatively. To collaborate courageously, with each other 𝐚𝐧𝐝 AI. AI isn't a shortcut—it's a mirror, reflecting our institutions' readiness to evolve, our willingness to reimagine education, and our commitment to preparing the next generation.   I’m grateful to collaborate with partners like Huawei, who are leading this transformation not just as tech providers, but as co-creators of a more intelligent and impactful education ecosystem.     Schools around the country are trying to figure out how to integrate AI into learning, and Alpha School, the AI-powered school network gives us one glimpse of what that can look like. A few takeaways from the conversation Diane Tavenner and I had with MacKenzie Price, co-founder of Alpha School and its AI learning platform, 2 Hour Learning: 1️⃣ AI isn’t replacing teachers, it’s carving out space for what only humans do well—At Alpha School, AI handles pacing, placement, monitoring engagement, and identifying gaps. That frees adults to focus on motivation, relationships, coaching, and mentoring. 2️⃣ “AI-first” doesn’t mean chatbots everywhere—In fact, Alpha School explicitly avoids chatbots for instruction. Instead, AI runs quietly in the background: directing students to the right content, flagging patterns (like rushing or guessing), and nudging students when they’re misusing learning tools. This is about eliminating distractions from technology as much as it is using technology to optimize learning. 3️⃣ Personalization is about time, not just content—The real unlock for MacKenzie wasn’t that students learn “twice as much.” It’s that they can complete core academics in about two hours and get meaningful time back for projects, life skills, and real-world work. AI makes that compression possible at scale. Learning isn’t a race—and the 2x language almost distracts from the bigger unlock here. Could say more here but holding back for now. 4️⃣ Motivation still comes from humans, but confidence comes from mastery—As students experience real progress at the right level and pace, confidence grows and motivation follows. AI supports that loop, but it doesn’t replace it. 5️⃣ This model only works because it’s coherent—AI at Alpha isn’t layered on top of a traditional school day. It’s embedded into a fundamentally different design—one that rethinks time, roles, assessment, and what school is actually for.

    6 mistakes facilitators make running virtual workshops they'd never make in person. You'd never stand in front of a room and talk for 25 minutes without checking if anyone's still with you. But on Zoom, you do it every week. Virtual workshops aren't in-person workshops on a screen. Different format. Different rules. Most facilitators haven't changed their approach. Here are 6 mistakes to stop making: 1. You talk for more than 5 minutes without interaction. In person, you can read the room while you talk. Online, you can't. After 5 minutes of one-way talking, half your participants are in another tab. → The fix: every 5 minutes, something changes. Chat prompt. Poll. Reaction. Question. If you haven't asked them to do something in 5 minutes, you've lost them. 2. You leave cameras optional. "Cameras preferred but not required" means cameras off. Cameras off means you're facilitating blind. → The fix: "Cameras on for this session. It's a working session and we need to see each other." Make on the default, not off. 3. You use the same timing as in-person. A 90-minute in-person activity doesn't work as a 90-minute virtual one. Screen fatigue hits faster than room fatigue. → The fix: cut every time block by a third. 15 minutes becomes 10. 60 becomes 40. Break every 45 minutes minimum. 4. You use breakout rooms without clear instructions. "Go into breakouts and discuss" is the virtual version of "I'll let you guys discuss." No structure. No output. No time limit. → The fix: before breakouts, three things. The question. The output. The time. "8 minutes. Answer this question. Type your answer in the shared doc before you come back." 5. You skip the closing. "We're at time, thanks everyone!" Click. No commitments. No accountability. Nothing locked in. → The fix: closing matters more virtually because there's no hallway conversation after. "Type your one commitment in the chat. Don't hit enter until I say go." Chat floods. Screenshot it and send within an hour. 6. You never use the chat. The chat is your written round, scale check, pulse read, and participation equaliser all in one. → The fix: the "waterfall." Everyone types their answer. Nobody hits enter. "3, 2, 1, go." 15 answers in 10 seconds. Quiet people contribute equally. No one dominates. The pattern: → Shorter blocks → More frequent interaction → Clear structure for every breakout → Chat as your primary tool Virtual isn't worse than in-person, but it is less forgiving, and it needs a different design. ___ Save this for later (three dots, top right).   • The most misunderstood benefit of AI in education: Equity. Not automation. Not speed. Here’s how AI is quietly helping students from ALL backgrounds catch up (and even pull ahead): Most people think AI in education means cheating, robot teachers, or screen-addicted kids. But the reality is that AI's true power is in leveling the playing field for ALL students. I've spent 10+ years revolutionizing education with my schools. Over the last several years, we discovered how AI can eliminate educational inequality when implemented correctly. In Brownsville, Texas, 1/4 of the community lives below the poverty line. We started a school that serves SpaceX employees' kids and students from he local, under-resourced community. Split 50-50. Yet our learning outcomes are identical across both groups. Traditionally, zip codes determine educational destiny. But our AI-powered model breaks this pattern. Local students who joined us in the 31st percentile jumped to the 86th percentile in just one year. How is this possible? Because traditional schools use a one-size-fits-all approach. In a typical classroom, abilities range widely, from kindergarten to sophomore level. What textbook works for that range? AI creates a personalized learning path for each student. It's like giving each child their own private tutor, something previously only available to the wealthy. Our model proves that kids are more capable than what traditional schools allow. With AI adjusting to each child's unique aptitudes and needs, students learn 2x faster. But it's not just about academic results. We want to transform how children see themselves as learners. And AI delivers that better future. Where educational inequality has been entrenched for generations, AI creates unprecedented opportunity. Students who are often left behind can thrive when liberated from a system not designed for their success. ALL kids can learn at high levels with the right tools and approach The question isn't whether AI belongs in education. It's whether we're ready to use it for true equity, ensuring every child can reach their full potential. AI isn't replacing teachers. It's reshaping what's possible for our kids.
