How to Build Organic Backlinks

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Building organic backlinks means earning links from other websites without paying for them, which helps increase your site's authority and visibility in search results. Instead of chasing artificial links, the focus is on publishing genuinely useful content and forming authentic relationships with relevant sites.

  • Create valuable content: Publish in-depth guides, original research, and unique tools that others naturally want to reference and share on their own sites.
  • Build real connections: Engage with industry peers, participate in local events, and collaborate with professionals to encourage natural mentions and links.
  • Share useful resources: Distribute your best articles and assets to targeted communities and organizations, making it easy for them to link back to your site.

I spent $40,000 on backlinks last year. Got 12 links. Rankings barely moved. Then I checked Ahrefs. 7 of those 12 links were on pages with zero traffic. Google was treating them as worthless. I had basically lit my budget on fire. So I rebuilt my entire link building system from scratch. Here is the 7-step framework I now use to earn quality links without burning cash: Step 1. Stop Buying Domain Authority. Start Buying Traffic. DA is a vanity score made by Moz. Google does not use it. What Google does use? PageRank-NearestSeeds. Pages with zero clicks pass zero PageRank value. So a link from a "DA 70" site with no readers is worthless. New rule: every prospect must have real organic traffic in Ahrefs or Semrush. No traffic, no deal. Step 2. Kill The Cold Email Templates Only 8.5% of cold outreach emails generate a link. Mine were doing worse. I trashed every "Hi [First Name], loved your post" template. Replaced with 3-line emails referencing one specific thing the author had written that week. Reply rate went from 1.4% to 19%. Step 3. Replace Outreach With Digital PR The math is brutal: 100 cold emails = 1 to 2 links if lucky. 1 strong data study = 15 to 40 links from journalists who actually want it. I started publishing one original report per quarter. Surveys, internal data, contrarian takes. Then I pitched it to 30 journalists in the niche. The links came to me, not the other way around. Step 4. Build Anchor Text Like A Normal Human Anchor text diversity below 30% gets you a 15-position drop. Confirmed. I capped exact-match anchors at 8% of the total profile. The rest is branded, generic, and naked URLs. Boring? Yes. Safe? Also yes. Step 5. Hunt Broken Links Before You Build New Ones Easiest links on earth. I run Ahrefs Site Explorer on competitor domains, filter for 404s with 5+ referring domains, then email the referring sites suggesting my page as a replacement. Conversion rate: roughly 1 in 8. Free links. No begging. Step 6. Use HARO And Source Platforms Daily Journalists are starving for expert quotes. I check Help A Reporter Out, Quoted, and Featured every morning. Three sharp paragraphs and a credential line. Cost per link: zero dollars. Time per link: 12 minutes. Step 7. Audit And Disavow The Junk Behind You Ahrefs ran a controlled experiment. Disavowing toxic backlinks caused a 13.3% traffic drop. Reinstating them recovered 99% of it. 18 months later, my client portfolio earns 60+ editorial links per month, mostly through digital PR and HARO. Average cost per link dropped from $1,170 to $187. Same budget. 6x the output. Zero penalty risk. If you are still buying $50 guest posts on dead blogs, you are not building authority. You are building debt. Save this. Share it with the person handing your money to the wrong vendor.

150,000 traffic/month without buying a single backlink The secret? Quality content that EARNS links naturally. Here's our exact blueprint: 🧵👇 1/ The mindset shift that changed everything: Stop thinking "how can I get links?" Start thinking "how can I create something people can't help but link to?" This one change took us from begging for backlinks to earning 50+ links per month organically. 2/ Our "Linkable Asset" Strategy: Instead of generic blog posts, we created EPIC resources: ✅ 14K word ultimate guides ✅ Original research & case studie ✅ Free tools & calculators ✅ Industry-first data analysis ✅ Contrarian takes with proof People link to value, not fluff. 3/ Created just 1 comprehensive psychology guide with interactive assessment tools and shareable personality insights. That generated: 20,000+ visitors in week 1 • 50+ high-quality backlinks • 300 paid users • Zero outreach effort 4/ Our content promotion playbook (no link building required): 🎯 Reddit (r/psychology, r/mbti, r/personalitytests) 🎯 Psychology forums and communities 🎯 Social media psychology groups 🎯 Academic research citations 🎯 Mental health awareness platforms Let quality speak for itself. 5/ The "Research-First" approach: Before writing, we spent 40 hours researching: • What competitors missed • Reddit/Quora questions • Industry pain points • First-hand case studies • Original data analysis This depth made our content irreplaceable. 6/ Why traditional link building fails: ❌ Generic outreach emails (2% response rate) ❌ Asking for favors from strangers ❌ Creating content FOR links, not FOR users ❌ Focusing on quantity over quality People can smell desperation from miles away. 7/ The psychological trigger that generates links: RECIPROCITY. When you mention someone in your content (with genuine value), they naturally want to share it. We mentioned 20+ industry experts in our guide. 15 of them shared it organically. 8/ Our "10x Content" checklist: Before publishing, we ask: □ Is this 10x better than anything else? □ Does it solve a real problem? □ Would I bookmark this myself? □ Does it contain unique insights? □ Is it genuinely helpful, not just optimized? 9/ The compound effect of quality: Each epic piece of content: • Attracts 5-10 natural links • Generates social shares • Builds brand authority • Increases search rankings • Attracts more opportunities Quality compounds. Spam doesn't. 10/ The brutal truth about backlinks: 1 link from a genuine reader who found value = 100 paid directory links Google's algorithm rewards authentic endorsements, not artificial ones. Focus on earning respect, not gaming rankings. 11/ Our results after 2 years of this strategy: 📈 1M+ monthly organic visitors 📈 500+ high-authority backlinks 📈 0 paid link building 📈 340% ROI on content investment Quality content is the ultimate growth hack. Here's something no SEO agency wants to admit: Building backlinks directly to product pages is usually a complete waste of money. Google knows no website owner naturally links to product pages unless they're being paid or have an affiliate deal. These links look manipulative to search engines, so they're often devalued or completely ignored. Yet I constantly see brands spending thousands on backlinks to product pages wondering why they can't crack page one. Through 4+ years of testing with 70+ e-commerce brands, here's the strategy that consistently delivers results: 1. Build 50% of your links to your homepage using branded anchors 2. Build 25% to collection/category pages using relevant keyword anchors 3. Build 25% to informational blog posts that internally link to your money pages This distribution naturally mimics how websites are typically linked to on the internet. For most keywords, you only need 10-20 high-quality, relevant backlinks (not thousands of spammy ones). And don't overpay. Quality backlinks typically run between $100-400 each. If someone's charging you $2K+ for a single link, you're likely getting ripped off. The key is relevance. A DR40 link from a site in your niche is worth infinitely more than a DR80 link from an irrelevant site. This exact strategy helped us take a skincare brand from page 5 to position 2 for their main collection page targeting "organic face moisturizer" with just 12 strategic links. And my #1 piece of advice on backlinks? Always aim for quality over quantity.

June 2026 SEO results for a contract manufacturer client: ✅ 69 organic leads, beating the monthly goal ✅ First-time calls from organic up +75% ✅ 348 keywords now ranking in Google's top 3, including the #1 spot for a core metal-stamping money term ✅ Organic traffic up +25% year over year ✅ $858K in SEO revenue YTD Here's how we did it. Seven layers, run consistently, and actionable for you (pulled straight from our task log): 1. Build a page for every material, part, and industry they serve. An engineer searches "titanium stamping," or "stampings for busbars," or "metal stamping for oil and gas." So we mapped that grid and published a dedicated page for each cell: material pages, application pages, and industry pages. 2. Pull the content out of the client's head and off their shop floor. In a technical niche, generic content loses, so we drove out to the facility to capture photos and audio, turned it into videos and posts, and had their engineers review the money pages for accuracy. This is the kind of work this Sixth City Marketing team does that makes me so proud to work here and it's why our clients win. 3. Make a text-heavy site pleasant to use. Redesigning page templates, adding graphics, charts, and infographics to pages that were walls of spec text, breadcrumbs, and cleaning up the mega-menu. Smooth out the UX as much as possible and use Clarity to spot issues and confirm solutions. 4. Build the most linkable assets out of boring industry data. A well-researched statistics and trends post (reshoring, domestic manufacturing) pulls backlinks in a niche where that can be tough to do. One tip: keep the year out of the URL so you can refresh the same post annually instead of starting over. 5. Show up off-site every single month. Expert-source and PR-style links, directory work, and unlinked-mention cleanup, done on a monthly cadence instead of in bursts. Nothing clever, just consistent. 6. Treat internal linking as a monthly job, not a one-time cleanup. With a lot of pages, internal links with specific anchor text are how authority and context reaches the money pages. It's on our task list every month. 7. Keep updating the pages that already work. New keyword variations, FAQs, comparison tables, and "key takeaways" added to existing pages, plus a full reformat of our single highest-traffic post. Map every material, part, and industry your buyer searches, publish a page for each, wire them together, and keep the whole thing fed. Account Strategist: Steve DiMatteo

Backlinks build empires. But 90% of addiction treatment centers waste resources chasing the wrong ones: It’s like giving out a bunch of branded stress balls at a trade show and wondering why no one remembers your booth. Years ago, I was part of a recruiting company that handed out scratch-off lottery tickets instead of boring swag. The booth was packed. We talked to tons of people. Not everyone was the right fit, but that strategy built conversations and connections that went way beyond a stress ball. You're probably asking: "𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘴?" Backlinks are no different. It’s about building the right connections. We’ve helped 50+ treatment centers dominate their local markets through strategic backlinking. Here’s what we've found actually works: 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 Start with medical directories, chambers of commerce, and professional associations. These carry more weight than 100 random blog links. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 → Mental health professionals → Intervention specialists → Family counselors → Support groups 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 → Sponsor local events → Host educational workshops → Partner with schools → Support recovery initiatives 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → Healthcare providers → Family support groups → Educational institutions → Local news outlets Local, relevant, authoritative links build trust. And trust drives admissions. Here’s a simple 5-step framework to get started: 1. Audit current backlinks. 2. Map local authority sites. 3. Build genuine relationships. 4. Create valuable resources. 5. Track and measure results. Simple. Not easy. But this works 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.

How we raised a moving company’s organic website traffic by 40% Last month, I worked with a moving company that was struggling to rank on Google. They had zero backlinks. They knew they needed to build a strong backlink profile, but they didn’t know where to start. That’s where I came in. Here’s how we approached it: 1. Competitor analysis We started by analyzing their top competitors in the area. ◾ Step 1: Identified local movers ranking for keywords like “movers in [city name].” ◾ Step 2: Used tools like Ahrefs to analyze their backlink profiles. ◾ Step 3: Found patterns—most competitors were getting backlinks from: ◽ Local directories. ◽ Industry-specific blogs. ◽ Review sites. From this, we prioritized high-quality, local backlinks that would have the biggest impact. 2. Content creation & outreach Next, we focused on creating content that others would want to link to. ◾ Blog Posts: We created articles like “10 Packing Hacks Every Mover Should Know.” ◾ Infographics: Designed a visual guide on “How to Safely Pack Fragile Items.” ◾ Videos: Produced short videos highlighting the moving company’s services and customer stories. For outreach, we: ◾ Pitched guest blog posts to local websites and moving industry blogs. ◾ Used HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to position the client as an expert for journalists. ◾ Shared content across social media to increase visibility. 3. Local SEO & citations We optimized their local presence with: ◾ A fully updated Google My Business profile (with accurate NAP info and new customer reviews). ◾ Listings on directories like Yelp, Angie’s List, and local chamber of commerce sites. ◾ Consistent online citations across all platforms. 4. Broken link building We identified broken links on local websites and reached out to the site owners. ◾ Suggested their blog posts and guides as replacements. ◾ Secured several quality backlinks through this strategy alone. 5. Building relationships We also helped the client establish local partnerships to generate backlinks: ◾ Collaborated with real estate agents and storage facilities. ◾ Sponsored local community events for exposure and mentions on event websites. Within 3 months, here’s what we achieved: ✔ Added 25 high-quality backlinks from local and industry-specific sites. ✔ Improved their local Google rankings by 2 positions for key keywords. ✔ Increased organic website traffic by 40%. Backlinks aren’t just about volume—they’re about quality, strategy, and relationships. P.S. I’m offering free consultation call (Link in bio) to help you: ◾ Identify backlink opportunities tailored to your niche. ◾ Build a roadmap for sustainable SEO growth. ◾ Start ranking higher and attracting more customers.

11 Proven Ways to Build High Quality Backlinks (to rank on Google & ChatGPT): 1. Guest Post on Authority Sites → Not just blogs...go for newsletters and industry publications → Think: niche newsletters, Substack guest editions, local biz sites 2. HARO + Featured Mentions → Still works, but now also try: Terkel, Qwoted, Help a B2B Writer → Faster and often more responsive than HARO 3. Partner Collaboration Pages → Add a “Partners” page and ask vendors, clients, and tools to do the same → You link to them, they link to you 4. Resource Pages & “Best Tools” Lists → Search: intitle:resources + [your industry] → Pitch your brand/tool/blog as an addition 5. Launch a Public SOP Library → Create step-by-step SOPs in your niche → People love linking to process docs + free templates → Bonus: Update monthly, turn it into a backlink magnet 6. Create an Industry Data Report → Run a survey, publish the data, design a PDF → Add original charts + insights → Outreach to bloggers who cover your space 7. Build a Free Tool (Even a Simple One) → ROI calculator, audit checklist, SEO grader, etc. → Tools get 10x more backlinks than blogs...if they’re useful 8. Interview Your Customers or Influencers → Turn interviews into long-form blog posts → The person you feature will often link back to it → Works great for consultants, coaches, service businesses 9. Turn Your Blog into a Book (Then Launch It) → Turn 5-10 pillar posts into an ebook → Publish on Gumroad or Amazon → Promote with a “Free Resources” campaign...backlinks follow 10. Sponsor a Niche Newsletter or Creator → Pick ones with solid SEO sites (Substack, Ghost, Medium) → Your brand gets a mention + backlink in the archive 11. Create an “Ultimate Linkable Asset” → Think: “100+ stats for [industry]”, “Complete guide to [X]”, “Tool comparisons” → Make it better than anything on Page 1 → Promote it once a month on social + through outreach --- Link building should start before outreach. If it’s not worth linking to, no one will. Most SEOs avoid doing hard work → that’s your edge. Give people value + reasons to reference you. Create once, promote monthly, stack links over time. --- Whatcha think? Agree or disagree? Repost ♻️ and let's start a discussion around backlinks. P.S. I'm Connor Gillivan. I've tested over 50+ different link building methods since 2009. Most are a waste of time in 2025, yet some SEOs are still using them. These 5 methods are the ones consistently delivering ROI right now: 1. Digital PR campaigns The holy grail of link building in 2025: • Create newsworthy content based on original research or data. • Target journalists that are already covering your topic. • Use tools like Muck Rack or Prowly to pitch them. • One campaign can generate 40+ high-authority links in a single month. 2. Strategic guest posting Not the spray-and-pray approach most use: • Reverse engineer your competitors in Ahrefs. • Pitch sites that already accept guest posts and rank for your keywords. • Offer value in the pitch: optimize a post for a keyword they’re missing. • Focus on quality over quantity - one DR70+ link beats twenty DR30 links. 3. Link insertions in existing content A quick way to get high-quality links: • Reach out to site owners and offer to update an old article for free. • Google: site:example. com intitle:2024 to find outdated pages. • Rewrite the piece to bring it up to date, with your link naturally added. • Link insertions alone can look unnatural. Mix in other types of links in your profile. 4. Reactive PR opportunities The HARO(RIP) replacement strategy: • Monitor journalist requests on Twitter, Linkedin, Qwoted, and Featured. • Set up alerts for topics in your expertise. • Respond quickly with concise, quotable insights. • Include relevant credentials that make you citation-worthy. 5. PBNs (grey hat, not for newbies) Still one of the best ways to get quick rankings if done right: • Build or buy clean expired domains with relevant backlinks. • Avoid spammy link farms. Look for sites with real history and traffic. • Or join a reputable PBN network. (like RankClub. io)

I’ve secured top local SEO rankings for every startup I’ve worked on by combining micro-influencer partnerships with strategic guest post backlinking. Guest posting is a smart way to grow your brand’s visibility and build meaningful connections at the same time you're improving your organic search visibility. Start by seeking out guest posting opportunities within your industry. Many blogs and sites are constantly searching for fresh content, and a well-pitched idea could open the door for collaboration. Even if you don’t see formal calls for submissions, most platforms welcome guest contributions. Medium, for example, offers a space to publish your own content whenever you like. Guest posting is about both links and relationships. By providing value to another platform, you’re not only boosting your SEO but also creating potential allies in your industry. And when you invite those collaborators to share their expertise on your platform, it becomes a mutually beneficial partnership. This approach has consistently worked for me, and it’s a scalable strategy for any startup. Ready to try it out?
