    Last month, I was mentoring a final-year engineering student who said: “Didi, mera resume toh blank hai, internships nahi mili, aur placements mein toh sirf CGPA dekhte hain na?” I asked him to show me what he had done. He hesitated and said, “Kuch YouTube tutorials se chhoti moti cheezein banayi thi…” But when I dug deeper, I found gold. ✅ He built a weather app using APIs. ✅ Tried making a budget tracker for his family. ✅ Attempted an ML model for crop prediction. All self-initiated. No certificates. No internships. I told him: “You must add these projects in your blank resume. Aur agar sahi tarike se dikhaye jaaye, toh yeh hi tumhara biggest strength ban sakta hai.” We added those to his resume, wrote crisp one-liners: 📌 Built a weather forecast web app using OpenWeather API – used by 50+ users weekly 📌 Created a budget management tool for household tracking – reduced manual expense logging by 80% Guess what? He cracked a remote internship in USA based finance startup in just 3 weeks.     Stop building projects nobody remembers. A portfolio is not impressive because it contains ten repositories. It becomes valuable when one project proves you can solve a real problem, make technical decisions, and ship a complete system. Here are eight projects that demonstrate engineering ability: ↳ Production SaaS dashboard with authentication, workspaces, analytics, uploads, and payments. ↳ E-commerce order system with inventory, checkout, refunds, webhooks, and failure handling. ↳ Real-time collaboration app using messaging, presence, file sharing, and recovery. ↳ URL shortener with redirects, analytics, rate limiting, caching, and expiration. ↳ Real-time data pipeline covering ingestion, validation, transformation, scheduling, monitoring, and failed-event handling. ↳ Enterprise knowledge assistant using retrieval, citations, access control, evaluation, and human escalation. ↳ Core infrastructure built from scratch, such as Redis, Git, SQLite, a shell, or a message queue. ↳ Developer productivity tool with a CLI, tests, logging, packaging, and documentation.     Dear Grads! I often speak to graduates who struggle to highlight their relevant skills and exprience when teying to enter the job market. I've summarized five impactful examples to include on a resume to stand out with "little working experience" whether you're in engineering, other STEM fields or any other field - it's relevant. 1️⃣ Relevant Academic Projects Highlight specific projects completed during your degree, especially if they demonstrate hands-on experience, problem-solving, or collaboration. Include the objectives, technologies used, and your contributions. Example: Designed and developed a robotic arm prototype for a project, using Arduino and CAD software to improve manufacturing efficiency by 20%. 2️⃣ Internship or Co-op Experience If you’ve interned or completed a co-op in a related field, emphasize your responsibilities, achievements, and the impact of your work. Example: Optimized assembly line processes during a 3-month internship at XYZ Manufacturing, reducing downtime by 15% through Lean Six Sigma principles. 3️⃣ Certifications and Skills List certifications or technical skills relevant to your field, such as CAD software, programming languages, or safety standards. Example: Certified in SolidWorks and MATLAB with hands-on experience in finite element analysis and data visualization. 4️⃣ Leadership and Teamwork Roles Mention leadership roles in student organizations, professional societies, or team projects that demonstrate your ability to lead and collaborate effectively. Example: Led a team of 5 engineering students in designing a solar-powered water purification system, managing timelines and securing project funding. 5️⃣ Awards and Recognitions Showcase academic awards, scholarships, or competition wins that reflect your excellence and dedication. This is how you go from: “I built a side project” → “I’ve already solved the kind of problems your team is working on.” Most won’t do this. But you can !
