Should you keep it simple and stick to one method of goal-setting...or is there benefit in adopting a hybrid approach? The answer can be determined by building your knowledge of goal setting methodologies and assessing your organizational size, maturity, complexity and change management capability. Many start ups and small businesses use simplified goal setting methods due to their size and limited resources. They might set SMART goals based on revenue, quality, customer acquisition, or product development, focusing on clear and attainable objectives. However, this approach doesn't always work when businesses get bigger! Larger, complex and diverse organizations generally use multiple goal setting methods to allow for a more nuanced and holistic approach to goal management. Some companies might set SMART goals for specific product development projects, OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) for strategic initiatives, and Balanced Scorecards for measuring overall performance, giving them a versatile approach. Others might use might use SMART goals for individual performance evaluations, Hoshin Kanri for strategic planning ( info on this approach in comments) and KPIs for tracking various operational metrics across different business units. Choosing the best methodologies for your organization requires involving employees, managers and other stakeholders in the decision-making process. You could also consider running a pilot program or trial period with different methodologies to assess their effectiveness in your specific organizational context. Remember...effective goal setting provides a clear roadmap for success, aligns efforts, motivates individuals and teams, and enables efficient monitoring and adaptation. The right methodology can drive performance and achievement. #goalsetting #goals #strategicplanning #strategicthinking #goalsettingtips Image source: SugarOKR.com

Don't go it alone - collaborate to deliver global impact with your research! Delighted to share findings from our newly published pilot-scale study on CO₂ capture heat integration. It's exciting not only because of new approach to reducing the reboiler duty by 6% and cooling duty by 24%, resulting in operating cost savings of CO2 capture. It's exciting because it proves that collaboration is essential for credible, impactful research. Our team brought together multi-institutional expertise, industrial partners, and real-world site access on a coal-fired power plant. This work was possible because this collaboration enabled: - Access to infrastructure - Operating a mobile pilot on a live power plant requires partnerships beyond any single lab. - Data rigour - Validating marginal energy gains demanded cross-disciplinary expertise, including thermodynamics, advanced data reconciliation, and process engineering. - Industrial validation - Co-developing with site operators built credibility and practical insight from day one. - Diverse expertise - Chemistry + engineering + simulation + field operations. Individual researchers miss insights that teams can easily identify. The lesson: Impact = great ideas + rigorous execution + real-world validation. Collaboration is how you deliver all three. If you're pursuing energy research with genuine traction, treat collaboration as a core strategy, not optional. Build networks early. Your best work will come from teams you haven't yet assembled. #science #research #scientist #researcher #professor #phd #CCUS #engineering

"This isn't just about hitting numbers, it's about creating shared understanding, fostering collaboration across teams, and helping people see how their work connects to the bigger picture." Molly Sands, PhD and I geeked out about culture, processes and systems for company goals. Goal setting and management might seem like a mundane topic, but I think it's the biggest driver of organizational alignment. Three key traits from Atlassian's approach: 1️⃣ Focus: Three to five measurable goals per team, per quarter. Review progress monthly throughout the organization, adjust quarterly. 2️⃣ Simplicity: Tweet-sized updates that reflect not only status but also what you're doing next, and where you need support. 3️⃣ Transparency: Everyone in the organization can see all the organization's goals, and can subscribe to updates from any team. "When people subscribe to goals from other teams and reach out to offer help, that's when you know the system is working. We're seeing cross-functional collaboration that never would have happened otherwise." 👉 Read on: https://lnkd.in/d5xHEGtP #Collaboration #Culture #Goals

Yesterday I took the entire revenue team (sales, cs, marketing) off the floor for out for a very specific training. Goal Setting. Yep. The entire org for over 60 min together learning how to set and achieve goals. I do this 2x a year with my teams. Why? Because most people never accomplish their goals because they never actually set them and never actually create a plan to achieve them. I've gotten pretty dang good at setting goals. I've gotten pretty dang good at achieving goals. It makes life so much more fun. So here are the key concepts I teach in goal settting. 1. Set a goal in each of the 5 buckets. Self. Health. Wealth. Proffessional. Experience. 2. Identify the Keystone Goal - Which goal if achieved will have the biggest impact on all the rest. 3. Who do you need to BE in order to achieve this goal - How would this person act, work, communicate, behave, etc 4. What do you need to BELIEVE to achieve this goal - this combined with number 3 is where we create our affirmations. 5. Why do you want this goal - aka what will change in your world when you achieve it - If nothing changes... nothing changes. 6. What are you done dealing with now/whats the negative of NOT achieving your goal - Having a negative is important when things get hard. 7. Why you Why Now - Why are you capable of achieving this goal, what traits, resources, etc do you have that allow you to believe you can do this. 8. What are your 3x3s - 3 things daily, weekly, and monthly that if done will give you your best shot at achieving - Example - Put workout clothes out the night before with the alarm across the room - that would be a good daily for health 9. Make it visual - Vision boards (we will be doing this in a couple weeks as a team) - but also visualize it each morning, each evening, not just the accomplishing of the goal, but the process to achieve it. 10. Accountability - Share it with people that not only want to see you win, but also with people that won't allow you to lose/will hold you to the fire. --- All written out by each individual and then my challenge to them is to read it every morning and every night for 60 days. Watch what happens when you do. A team that sets goals together, wins together. I can't wait to see so many of theirs goals, so many of their affirmations, and so many of their achievements. This is going to be good ya'll. Just wait and see. PS - this is one of the most popular modules in the Sales Leadership Accelerator in fact it's unlocked right out the gate for all members. PPS - I'll be doing this workshop at Pavilion GTM in a few weeks as well here in Austin. Lets set and smash some goals ya'll!

‼️The fastest way to kill a good IVD innovation is not bad science. It is a slow agreement‼️ In India, many promising diagnostic ideas do not fail inside the lab. They fail between the lab and the market. One institution wants publication priority. One company wants IP clarity. One hospital wants sample-use protection. One researcher wants credit. One manufacturer wants commercial certainty. All are valid concerns. But when every collaboration starts from a blank document, months are lost in negotiation before real work even begins. This is where India needs a very simple but powerful reform: Standard IP and collaboration templates for IVD innovation. Ready-to-use templates for: Confidentiality agreements. Material transfer agreements. Joint development agreements. IP ownership. Licensing rights. Revenue sharing. Publication timelines. Clinical sample access. Data-use boundaries. Commercialisation rights. This will not reduce seriousness. It will reduce confusion. Academia should know how its research will be protected. Research organisations should know how material and data will be used. Hospitals should know how patient samples and ethics approvals will be respected. Industry should know whether it has a clear path to validation, scale-up and market access. Innovation does not need more paperwork. It needs better paperwork. A standard template is not a shortcut. It is a trust architecture. If we want academia, research institutions and the IVD industry to collaborate faster, we must remove avoidable friction from the system. India has enough scientific talent. Now we need operating discipline. Because in diagnostics, speed matters. Not careless speed. But structured speed. The country that standardises collaboration will commercialise innovation faster. And the country that commercialises innovation faster will serve patients better. IVD innovation should not wait six months for the first draft of an agreement. It should begin with clarity from day one. 👉Please share your thoughts ? ‼️Repost if this insight helps‼️ #IVD #Diagnostics #MedTech #Innovation #AcademiaIndustryCollaboration #MakeInIndia #HealthcareInnovation ASSOCIATION OF DIAGNOSTICS MANUFACTURERS OF INDIA

Sharing an approach I’ll be using to kick off the facilitation of an HSE Leaders Forum tomorrow that I hope others might find valuable. Instead of starting with the usual introductions (name, job role etc), I want to focus on the reason we are there: discussing innovative ways to solve the challenges participants are facing in their workplaces or industries. Each participant will introduce themselves by sharing a challenge framed as a "How Might We?" (HMW) statement. This simple method encourages participants to: 1️⃣ Clarify the Challenge: Turning a health and safety challenge into an opportunity helps focus the conversation on possibility. 2️⃣ Spark Collaboration: Open-ended, opportunity-focused challenges invite diverse perspectives and ideas. 3️⃣ Create Immediate Value: Sharing key challenges helps everyone see where they can contribute and connect meaningfully - on the things that matter. "How might we better communicate critical risk management expectations with subcontractors?" "How might we reduce working at height activities in our business?" "How might we assure critical risk controls in real-time?" I’ve found this approach aligns discussions with what really matters, and leaves participants with actionable insights. If you’re planning a collaborative session, this could be a great way to shift from introductions to impactful conversations right from the start. Feel free to adapt this for your own forums or workshops; I’d love to hear how it works for you and if you have any other facilitation tips. #SafetyTech #SafetyInnovation #Facilitation #Learning

Want more productive workshops? Try stopping them sooner. Workshops often lock people in a room for two or three hours and expect them to do their best thinking on demand. Do we really have to hold people hostage to be productive? Lately, I’ve been using a technique I call "Echo Sessions." Instead of forcing deep work to happen in real time, we kickstart an activity, get clarity, but then stop just as people are getting into it. That pause is intentional. It’s based on the same principle as the Pomodoro technique—when you leave something unfinished while still feeling engaged, you'll find it easy to return to it later and give it space to percolate. Instead of dragging out a long workshop, I schedule an Echo Session later—often in the same day—where everyone brings their independent or small group work back for discussion, iteration, and action. Why does this work? ✅ Encourages Deep Work – People get time to think, research, or create in their own way, rather than being forced into artificial collaboration. ✅ Optimizes Meeting Time – Workshops should be for shared understanding, decision-making, and iteration—not for quiet focus time. ✅ Respects Different Work Styles – Some need time to walk and think. Others need to sketch. Some want to research or tap into AI. Echo Sessions give people time and space to work in the way that’s best for them. ✅ Creates Natural Momentum – Stopping at a high-energy moment makes people want to continue later, giving them space to create, rather than leaving them drained from a marathon session. ✅ Reduces Calendar Lockdowns – Instead of monopolizing hours at a time, work is distributed more effectively and meetings are only used when necessary. Most importantly, this approach treats participants like adults. It gives them flexibility and agency while ensuring that meetings serve a clear, valuable purpose. We don’t need long workshops. We need better workshops. Curious—how do you approach workshop fatigue? Would this work in your team?

Before the start of each new year my partner Anurag Viswanath 🤖 and I set goals for ourselves across three dimensions - personal, professional and couple goals. 👫 A lot of people do this on their own. Here’s why we share this exercise: 1. Having an accountability partner who's equally invested means regular goal reviews that keep both of you on track. 2. Many personal and professional goals inevitably need your partner's involvement. By defining and prioritizing goals together as a couple, you stack the odds of achievement in your favor. Over the years we’ve experimented with many frameworks for goal setting and here’s what we’ve found to be the most effective. 🎯 Under each theme (personal, professional and couple) it’s super important to start by looking back on the last year and just talking through your highs and lows. It also makes for a really wholesome afternoon to spend together. ✍️ Next, put pen to paper- and we actually prefer doing it analog and then transferring it to a digital format - with sections for: 1. Defining your main goals 2. Breaking them down into smaller, actionable steps 3. Setting deadlines or timeframes (we do this quarterly) 4. Identifying potential obstacles and solutions 5. Tracking progress (monthly) It doesn’t need to be in a fancy spreadsheet or an aesthetic journal. Just make sure each goal is a SMART GOAL ie. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. 💪 Optional: We also set one Misogi for ourselves each year. A Misogi challenge is something so daunting that it hovers between possible and impossible. The idea is to set a goal that has about a 50% chance of success if you do everything right. Most importantly, keep your goals visible. Having them "out there" serves as a constant reminder of the expectations you've set for yourselves. We use Pinterest/ Canva to create vision boards and use them as our phone wallpapers. Happy 2025 planning! Let me know if you try it 📝 #GoalSetting #NewYearGoals #Planning2025

#ThrivingToGetWorkDone Post 4 of 9: The Importance of Clear Goals and Expectations: Setting the Stage for Success Clear communication of goals and expectations is vital when working with people who don’t directly report to you. It ensures everyone is aligned and working towards the same objectives. Here are two short use cases on how to activate this skill in routine work within the hospital industry: Use Case 1: Setting Expectations for a Cross-Departmental Quality Improvement Initiative You’re leading a cross-departmental initiative to improve patient discharge times. At the start, you gather the key stakeholders from Nursing, Administration, and the Medical Records department. You clearly outline the project goals: “Our objective is to reduce patient discharge times by 20% over the next quarter. Each department plays a critical role—Nursing will ensure timely completion of discharge instructions, Administration will streamline the billing process, and Medical Records will expedite the final documentation. Let’s aim to have weekly check-ins to track our progress and adjust as needed.” By setting clear expectations, you align the team’s efforts towards a common goal, minimizing misunderstandings and delays. Use Case 2: Clarifying Goals for a New Patient Feedback System Implementation In another scenario, you’re part of a team tasked with implementing a new patient feedback system across the hospital. You kick off the project by clarifying the goals: “Our goal is to increase patient feedback participation by 30% within six months. The IT team will handle the technical setup, the Nursing team will encourage patients to participate, and the Quality department will analyze the feedback for actionable insights. Everyone’s role is crucial, and I encourage open communication if challenges arise.” This clarity in goals and expectations ensures that everyone understands their role in the project’s success. #My2Cents: Clear goals and expectations are the foundation of any successful collaboration. When everyone knows what’s expected and why it matters, it fosters accountability and drives collective success. Let’s make sure we’re all on the same page to achieve our shared objectives. These posts aim to invoke a better overall environment by sharing practical ways to enhance workplace collaboration and productivity. What strategies do you use to communicate goals and expectations?
