Speaking only one language is now identified as a risk factor for accelerated cognitive aging. A major new study in Nature Aging examining 86,149 people across 27 European countries just confirmed what many of us in bilingual education have long suspected—but with unprecedented rigor. Previous research showed bilinguals developed dementia later than monolinguals, but critics rightfully questioned whether this was really about language or other factors: immigration experiences, socioeconomic status, educational access. Fair concerns. This study controlled for all of them. The findings held across 27 countries, across different socioeconomic contexts, across various linguistic combinations. The more languages you speak, the better you age cognitively. But here's what stopped me: monolingualism itself emerged as a risk factor, while multilingualism showed protective effects in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. The authors' recommendation? Include multilingualism in public health and educational frameworks. So when someone tells you "AI translation means nobody needs to learn languages anymore," consider what we're actually giving up: not just communication skills, but cognitive protection as we age. The technology is impressive. The long-term health consequences of linguistic atrophy? We're just beginning to understand them. We're still teaching multilingual learners like it's 1995. We tell teachers that every student should be prepared to teach multilingual learners, but most receive zero training on how to actually do it well. Meanwhile, research keeps telling us the same thing: students' home languages aren't obstacles to overcome, they're powerful cognitive resources that accelerate learning when we let kids use them. It's called translanguaging, and it's changing everything we thought we knew about language learning. But here's the disconnect. Most classrooms still operate on an "English-only" mindset, quietly discouraging students from thinking, processing, or collaborating in their home languages. We're essentially asking students to learn with one hand tied behind their back. When teachers intentionally let multilingual students use their full linguistic repertoire, it enhances comprehension, deepens understanding, and affirms their identities. Not "sometimes." Consistently. The students who will dominate the 2030s workforce aren't going to be monolingual. They'll be the kids who learned to code-switch effortlessly, think multilingually, and bridge cultures naturally. So why are we still treating multilingualism like a deficit instead of a superpower? Prof. Krishna Kumar’s incisive article “A Multilingual Classroom” is more than a commentary on CBSE’s recent circular. It is a clarion call to reimagine the very foundations of how we structure knowledge, power, and belonging in Indian classrooms. For far too long, English has functioned not simply as a medium of instruction but as a marker of cultural capital. It has shaped hierarchies of aspiration, legitimacy, and success. Kumar traces this back to our intellectual inheritance, where figures like Tagore, Gandhi, Vivekananda, and J.P. Naik emphasized the primacy of the child’s mother tongue in education. They understood that learning is not merely linguistic but deeply embodied, rooted in the child’s lived experience and cultural imagination. CBSE’s recent move to foreground the mother tongue in early primary education has the potential to be a turning point. This is not a minor administrative directive but a philosophical shift. If carried through with conviction, it could begin to undo the alienation that many children feel when schooled in a language that neither reflects their reality nor affirms their identity. What is needed now is a radical rethinking of the future. A truly multilingual classroom must be rooted in equity, empathy, and epistemic justice. It must allow children to think, dream, and express themselves in the languages that hold meaning for them. This means: - Curriculum must move beyond textbook translation and begin producing knowledge systems grounded in regional thought and expression. - Teacher training must empower educators to handle multilingual classrooms with pedagogical creativity, not see them as problems to be managed. - Assessment frameworks must respect linguistic diversity and stop punishing students for not conforming to monolingual norms. - Parental engagement must involve reframing aspirations around linguistic richness instead of monolithic English dominance. 🎉 Today I had the chance to present our new paper at ComputEL-9, co-located with ACL 2026 in San Diego! 📄 "Revitalising Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage through Language Technology: A Pilot Study for Dzardzongke" What do you do when your language: ❌ has no writing system ❌ has 1,200 native speakers left in the world ❌ has barely any internet representation ...but wants to preserve its language, culture, and community? Dzardzongke is a Tibetic language spoken by a small community in South Mustang, Nepal. Like many minority languages in the region, it has no standard orthography, very little digital presence, and is at serious risk of falling out of daily use as younger generations shift toward more dominant languages. ✅ So, we built an app to teach Dzardzongke speakers how to read and write their own language and create a space for themselves. In this paper, we describe a pilot mobile app built with the Dzardzongke-speaking community rather than just for it — designed to be simple, accessible, and genuinely useful for everyday language transmission. We talk through the design choices, the challenges of building tools for a language with no fixed writing system, and how to make sure this app will be maintained in the future. One thing that really stuck with me: so much of the "hard problem" in this space isn't the NLP — it's the trust, the co-design process, and building something a community will actually want to keep using after the researchers leave. Can #AI Help Revitalize #Indigenous #Languages?, by Serena Jampel -- Indigenous technologists are using artificial intelligence to create tools that support language learning in ways that center community control and cultural values. Instead of replacing traditional teaching, these tools aim to reinforce everyday use and make learning more accessible, especially for younger people and schools with limited resources. The article highlights three examples developed within Indigenous communities: – A talking robot for Anishinaabemowin learners Danielle Boyer, an Anishinaabe roboticist, designed Skobot, a small robot that sits on the shoulder and speaks Anishinaabemowin. It uses motion and sound sensors to play pre-recorded words and phrases from fluent speakers. Boyer’s goal is to help children hear and interact with their heritage language in daily life, guided by cultural protocols and community input. – A Choctaw-English chatbot built for practice and humor Jacqueline Brixey, who is Choctaw and Cherokee, created Masheli, a conversational chatbot that talks in both Choctaw and English. It uses culturally familiar language, humor, and storytelling to help learners feel comfortable while practicing. The bot avoids correction and encourages continued engagement, especially for users who may be shy about speaking aloud. – Offline voice-based learning kits for schools Michael Running Wolf leads the FLAIR project in Quebec, which develops voice-activated curricula for Indigenous languages. These portable kits are designed for classrooms without reliable internet access. Using limited recordings from elders, the systems provide automatic speech recognition to guide pronunciation and support language instruction directly in community schools. NEW WAY TO KEEP OUR LANGUAGES ALIVE. Not in a museum. Not locked in a classroom. Not waiting for permission. In your pocket. The Coeur d’Alene Tribe just launched something powerful. An app called Coyote Stories. Built by their own people. For their own people. And here’s what I respect most… they didn’t wait for funding, a big team, or some outside “expert” to validate it. Two people built it. That’s it. Inside the app is real language, real voices, real stories. Flashcards, audio from speakers, stories told the way they’re meant to be told. Even Coyote himself guiding the experience. This isn’t just tech. This is survival. Because when a language is down to a handful of speakers, you don’t have time to debate strategy for ten years. You move. You build. You protect what’s left. And they understood something a lot of people still don’t. If our kids are on phones, then our language needs to be there too. Not watered down. Not turned into something it’s not. But carried forward in a way they’ll actually use. That’s how you keep something alive. They also made a choice that matters. No generic AI visuals. No stock imagery. They brought in their own artists, their own people, their own style. That’s the difference between content and culture. One is made to fill space. The other carries responsibility. And here’s the bigger picture. This isn’t just about one Nation. They’re already working with other Nations to help them build their own versions. That’s how this spreads. Not through institutions. A minority language with literacy becomes self-sustaining. Over 5 million Multilingual Learners (MLLs) are in U.S. public schools today (NCES, 2023). They’re not just learning English — they’re thinking, feeling, and problem-solving across languages. That’s not a gap. That’s a superpower. Studies show multilingualism improves cognitive flexibility, executive function, and long-term academic achievement (Bialystok, 2011; Thomas & Collier, 2002). And yet, MLL students are often underestimated. I’ve seen the magic firsthand: A newcomer who arrives in silence ends the year reading aloud. A student translating for their parents while crushing the state test. THE ARCHITECTURE OF BILITERACY Exploring how the brain builds literacy across languages. THE BRAIN DOES NOT TRANSFER WORDS. IT TRANSFERS KNOWLEDGE. When bilingual learners acquire a new concept, they are not simply memorizing a word. They are building understanding. Words are labels. Knowledge is the structure those labels represent. A child who understands the concept of evaporation does not lose that understanding when switching languages. The linguistic label changes. The concept remains. The same principle applies to mathematical reasoning, scientific thinking, historical understanding, and countless everyday experiences. The brain stores far more than vocabulary. It stores concepts. Relationships. Experiences. Mental models. These become the foundation upon which new linguistic knowledge is built. This helps explain why bilingual learners often understand an idea before they know how to express it in a particular language. The knowledge already exists. What they are still developing is access to the linguistic system needed to communicate it. This distinction has important implications for instruction. When teaching through an additional language, educators are not always teaching new knowledge. Sometimes they are helping students attach new linguistic labels to concepts they already understand. Recognizing this changes how we interpret classroom performance. A student who cannot yet explain an idea in English may still possess a sophisticated understanding of that idea. The challenge may be linguistic expression rather than conceptual understanding. Biliteracy develops not only by expanding vocabulary in two languages. It develops by continually connecting language to knowledge that already exists. Words change.
