This year, in one of our major projects, we faced a 7-week #delay as a result of an issue outside the technology team’s control. And yet, the team still delivered the project on time. At face value, that sounds like a #victory right? Wrong! Below the surface, that “success” came at a very human cost of impossible workloads, long nights, sacrificed weekends, personal trade-offs, deprioritized health & an extraordinary level of #resilience. In technology organizations, when teams perform miracles, those often get misinterpreted as “If they did it once, they can always do it again.” That’s exactly where cultures break. This experience invites an honest reflection on 3 x scenarios that organizations too often confuse: 1️⃣Firefighting ≠ Project Management What the Core & VAS Team has achieved was heroic. The teams mobilized, stretched, pushed and delivered against odds. But it's not sustainable, therefore, it shouldn’t be interpreted as a delivery framework. It should be celebrated, but not repeated as a new operational baseline in terms of project delivery. 2️⃣Stretching Capability ≠ Sustainable Velocity To stretch ourselves is part of #growth & a contributing factor for #excellence. But stretching is like emergency spectrum refarming. You can do it once, maybe twice, but it is not a long-term #operatingmodel. It’s a capability and not a #workloadmodel. It highlights what is possible occasionally, not what should be expected consistently. 3️⃣Vendor Accountability ≠ Wishful Timelines Core Network projects in telecom are not “standard IT deliveries.” They are closer to open-heart surgery. They involve signaling, core functions, security, cloud platforms, integrations, and a web of interdependencies where every component matters. Our ability to absorb a 7-week delay and still hit the deadline reveals 2 x critical #lessons: ✅ Technical teams must set project timelines that are truly realistic, respecting proper testing windows, delivery quality, controlled change processes, workload limits, and human dignity. ✅ Technology partners must be held to the same level of realism. Timelines are not always based on technical best effort. Sometimes they are shaped by worst case scenario, commercial interests, or the assumption that internal teams will compensate. That’s how, in several projects, we end up with tasks planned for weeks that, under pressure, are suddenly delivered in 48 hours. This year,we proved that we can deliver the impossible! But the greatest #achievement lies elsewhere. 🌟In creating a context where success doesn’t depend on heroic acts. 🌟In building organizations where excellence comes from clarity, balance, and purposeful design, not from emergencies. 🌟In shaping futures defined by resilient systems, accountable partnerships & humane timelines. 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 2 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝. • Project: Telecom 5G deployment with cross-functional teams (Network Ops, BSS/OSS, QA, Dev). • Issue: Delays due to vendor integration issues, and client was losing confidence. Step 1: Acknowledge the Problem (But Don’t Dwell on It) • Action: Acknowledged the delay openly in a call with the client, without deflecting blame. • Outcome: This established trust. Clients value transparency more than perfection. Step 2: Execute a "Fire Drill" Assessment • Action: Within 24 hours, held a “fire drill” war room with all internal stakeholders to assess the root causes of the delays and determine critical path items. • Outcome: Identified bottlenecks (vendor delays, infrastructure setup) and developed a plan to mitigate them. Step 3: Implement Parallel Workstreams • Action: We broke the project into high-priority “sprints” for each workstream (e.g., network configuration, user testing, API integration), and fast-tracked them in parallel. • Outcome: Reduced dependency delays by ensuring teams could work simultaneously without waiting on others. Step 4: Proactive Client Communication • Action: Set up daily check-ins with the client, providing quick updates on progress, setbacks, and mitigations. Even if nothing major changed, we kept them in the loop. • Outcome: The client appreciated the proactive communication, which helped maintain confidence. Step 5: Focus on Critical Path Deliverables • Action: Prioritized the most impactful deliverables, cutting non-essential tasks from the sprint backlog. • Outcome: By focusing on critical, client-facing features, we ensured value delivery despite the delays. Step 6: Empower the Team to Problem-Solve • Action: Gave team leads autonomy to make decisions and escalate blockers faster without waiting for approvals. • Outcome: Empowered teams moved faster and made real-time adjustments without bottlenecking at leadership. Step 7: Tighten Release Planning • Action: Worked with the client to extend the release window slightly, providing a realistic and achievable timeline. • Outcome: Reduced the pressure on teams while still ensuring we could deliver on time. You know that moment when “Project Phoenix” fails spectacularly, so you immediately launch “Project Velocity”? Same core team. Same problems. Different shade of purple in the slide deck. For International Project Management Day next week (6th November 2025), it’s worth reflecting on what we’re actually celebrating. Here’s what truly delivers change: high-performing programme and project management. Not “Transformation Initiatives.” Not “Innovation Sprints.” Not “Agility Programmes.” Actual, functional excellence in project delivery. The kind practised by professionals who understand that change happens through rigorous planning—detailed schedules with dependencies, critical paths, and resource allocation that exists in reality. Through disciplined execution: scope control, risk management, quality assurance. The unsexy fundamentals that actually work. Yet in offices across the country, failing projects continue their zombie existence under new names. The struggling CRM becomes “AI-Powered.” The initiative bleeding money becomes “Strategic.” The same team that couldn’t deliver last quarter will somehow succeed this quarter because they’ve added “Agile” to the title. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: buzzwords are a substitute for capability. When an organisation lacks the functional excellence to deliver change, it reaches for euphemisms. When it doesn’t have qualified programme managers who can plan, execute, and control complex initiatives, it launches rebrands. The project management professionals we celebrate next week don’t need to rename projects. They’re building the programme properly in the first place. High-performing programme and project management delivers change because it’s built on discipline, not wishful thinking. It acknowledges constraints. It identifies dependencies. It manages risks before they become issues. It’s the difference between a portfolio review that tracks real progress against real plans, and a status meeting where everyone agrees the renamed project will definitely work this time. Functional excellence isn’t glamorous. It doesn’t photograph well for LinkedIn. It can’t be captured in a three-word initiative name. But it’s what actually transforms organisations. On International Project Management Day, perhaps the real celebration would be committing to this excellence, hiring qualified professionals, building mature PMOs, implementing proper governance, training teams in disciplined delivery. Less exciting than a rebrand. Infinitely more effective than a thesaurus. Because change isn’t delivered by what you call it. Getting it RFT isn’t just about doing things better—it’s about transforming how we work. The Unseen Challenge of 5G: It's Not Just Technology, It's an Ecosystem After leading the deployment and modernization of 145+ RAN sites for mission-critical networks, I've learned a crucial lesson: The biggest hurdle in large-scale telecom projects is rarely the technology itself. The real test lies in orchestrating the entire ecosystem. We successfully navigated from initial planning to final live operation, but the journey revealed that true success is built on three pillars beyond the technical specs: 1. The Integration Maze: We didn't just configure BBUs and RRUs. We wove together a complex tapestry of power systems (DGs, ATS), security networks (IP cameras, NVRs), and transmission links. The achievement wasn't in making a single component work, but in making them all interoperate seamlessly. 2. The Human & Process Equation: Synchronizing multiple vendor teams, aligning different priorities, and maintaining rigorous timelines is a leadership challenge. The "soft skills" of project management are what transform a technical plan into a live, operational asset. 3. The Reliability Mandate: For critical infrastructure, "good enough" is a failure. Achieving 99.9% uptime wasn't a target; it was a non-negotiable requirement. This demands a mindset of proactive planning, resilient design, and relentless attention to detail that goes far beyond standard deployments. Technical Stewardship & Risk Mitigation Strong technical grounding enables a Project Manager to “look under the hood” — identifying bottlenecks, integration gaps, and design risks before they escalate into costly delays. 1.1) Early Intervention : Challenging assumptions and validating design decisions during proposal, bidding, and FEED phases to prevent downstream issues. 1.2) Quality Assurance : Ensuring engineering hours are invested, not merely spent — promoting integrated, coordinated, and error‑resistant design across all disciplines to minimize rework. 2.
