    ⏳ Designing Better Loading and Progress Indicators UX. Practical UX guidelines to reduce the impact of waiting and choose the right loading indicator based on anticipated wait time ↓ ✅ Perception of wait time is more important than its duration. 🤔 Users overestimate passive waiting (standing still) by 36%. ✅ Active waiting (walking, interacting) feels much shorter. ✅ 20% rule: users only notice speed changes of at least 20%. 🤔 Small optimizations (e.g. shaving 0.2s off 5s) go unnoticed. ✅ 2 questions: "How much longer?" and "Is it working?" 🚫 Don’t use any loading indicators for waiting times < 1s. ✅ Short wait times (1–3s): use skeleton screens or spinners. ✅ Medium wait times (3–10s): use progress bars or indicators. ✅ Long wait time (10+s): show progress and allow interaction. 🤔 Uncertainty makes waiting feel significantly longer. ✅ Explain to users what’s happening in the background. ✅ Optimistic UI: ask for next steps while procees is running. ✅ The more valuable the reward, the longer tolerance to wait. ✅ Aim for improving perceived speed with reduced passive wait. Often we can’t speed up interactions for technical reasons. But we can reduce the perceived waiting time, which is often way more important than the actual duration. When a UI visualizes progress, users accept longer waits because they have right expectations and can track progress ((Buell & Norton, 2011). People are impatient if they don’t know how long to wait. Waiting without any explanation (spinning circle) feels longer than one where the product says why it’s busy. Also, waiting to START a task feels longer than waiting for a task to FINISH, so early start helps reduce frustrations as well. Users also tend to be highly sensitive to “queue jumping”. If a process they started later finishes earlier than a previous one, it creates significant frustration and abandonment. In the end, it’s all about setting right expectations, explaining what happens frequently and keeping people busy when waiting.     What's your approach to designing user flows? ✏️ -Understand the User and Goals: Start by gaining a deep understanding of the target users, their needs, and their goals. Conduct user research, interviews, and surveys to gather insights into their behaviors, pain points, and motivations. Define User Personas: Create user personas to represent different segments of your target audience. Personas help humanize the users and guide the design process to meet their specific needs. -Map the User Journey: Outline the entire user journey from the initial touchpoint to the final goal. This involves understanding the various stages users go through when interacting with your product and identifying potential entry and exit points. Identify Key User Tasks: Identify the primary tasks users want to accomplish within your product. Focus on the core functionality and prioritize these tasks in the user flow. Create a Flowchart: Visualize the user flow by creating a flowchart. Use arrows to show the sequence of steps users will take to complete their tasks. Consider different scenarios and decision points they might encounter. Keep it Simple and Intuitive: Aim for simplicity and clarity in the user flow. Minimize the number of steps required to achieve a task and avoid unnecessary complexity that could confuse users. Consistency across Platforms: If your product is available on multiple platforms (e.g., web, mobile), ensure a consistent user flow across all of them. Users should feel comfortable and familiar with the flow, regardless of the device they are using. Anticipate User Errors: Design the user flow with the anticipation of user errors or confusion. Provide clear error messages and guidance to help users recover quickly. User Testing and Iteration: Test the user flow with real users through usability testing sessions. Analyze the feedback and data to identify pain points and areas of improvement. Iterate and refine the user flow based on the insights gained. Collaborate with the Team: Involve stakeholders, designers, developers, and other team members in the user flow design process. Collaborative efforts lead to a more comprehensive and well-rounded user experience. Consider Edge Cases: Take into account edge cases and less common scenarios in your user flow design. This ensures that your product is accessible and usable for all users, regardless of their specific circumstances. Accessibility and Inclusivity: Design with accessibility and inclusivity in mind.     One of the best ways to align teams, stakeholders, and strategy is to make the invisible visible. That’s why I’m such a fan of mapping techniques. They help you zoom out, focus in, and uncover the things that are often hiding in plain sight. Whether it’s unclear goals, conflicting priorities, or pain points users are quietly putting up with. Here are 7 mapping techniques I keep coming back to and how I use them in delivery: 🗺️ User Story Mapping Helps me turn flat backlogs into something visually dynamic, tangible, and user-focused. I use this to map out a user's journey step by step, then slice features based on what really matters to them. It’s a brilliant way to align teams around MVPs and delivery releases. 🗺️ Impact Mapping Just like Simon Sinek this one starts with why. It links business goals to user behaviors and potential features, helping teams focus on outcomes over outputs. I’ve used it to reframe entire product roadmaps around expected impact instead of a list of things to build. 🗺️ Wardley Mapping This is more strategic and it's great for mapping components of a system by how visible they are to users and how mature they are. It’s helped me spot where we should innovate, where we can standardise, and where buying makes more sense than building. 🗺️ Dysfunction Mapping I use this when things feel off, but the problem or solution isn’t immediately obvious. It’s a structured way to identify root causes of delivery friction whether it’s misaligned priorities, unclear ownership, or recurring blockers. Great for retros and recovery plans. 🗺️ Stakeholder Mapping Simple but powerful. I use this to understand who’s influencing the project, who needs to be kept in the loop, and who we might be unintentionally leaving out. It’s especially useful when stepping into a new team or navigating complex stakeholder landscapes. 🗺️ Experience Mapping This is about stepping into the user’s shoes and walking through their journey. Not just where the product touches them, but where the experience begins and ends. I’ve used this to uncover gaps, friction points, and opportunities we hadn’t considered. 🗺️ Empathy Mapping When we’re trying to build something truly user-centric, empathy mapping helps us understand what users think, feel, say, do, and hear. It goes deeper than roles or personas and helps teams emotionally hook in with the people we’re building for. If you’re in delivery, product, UX, or transformation work there’s probably a mapping method in here that can help you in your day to day role.     Great journey maps start from the intersection of user touchpoints. A customer journey map shows a customer's experiences with your organization, from when they identify a need to whether that need is met. Journey maps are often shown as straight lines with touchpoints explaining a user's challenges. start •—------------>• finish At the heart of this approach is the user, assuming that your product or service is the one they choose to use in their journey. While journey maps help explain the conceptual journey, they often give the wrong impression of how users are trying to solve their problems. In reality, users start from different places, have unique ways of understanding their problems, and often have expectations that your service can't fully meet. Our testing and user research over the years has shown how varied these problem-solving approaches can be. Building a great journey map involves identifying a constellation of touchpoints rather than a single, linear path. Users start from different points and follow various paths, making their journeys complex and varied. These paths intersect to form signals, indicating valuable touchpoints. Users interact with your product or service in many different ways. User journeys are not straightforward and involve multiple touchpoints and interactions…many of which have nothing to do with your company. Here’s how you can create valuable journeys: → Using open-ended questions and a product like Helio, identify key touchpoints, pain points, and decision-making moments within each journey. → Determine the most valuable touchpoints based on the intersection frequency and user feedback. → Create structured lists with closed answer sets and retest with multiple-choice questions to get stronger signals. → Represent these intersections as key touchpoints that indicate where users commonly interact with your product or service. → Focus on these touchpoints for further testing and optimization. Generalizing the linear flow can be practical once you have gone through this process. It helps tell the story of where users need the most support or attention, making it a helpful tool for stakeholders. Here's a comprehensive guide! What is the Banana Curve? The "Banana Curve" is a term used in construction project controls to describe the visual depiction of project performance, often shown on an S-curve. This curve illustrates the cumulative progress over time, contrasting planned (baseline), actual, and forecast progress curves.     During meetings with stakeholders, we often hear about 𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔, 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒍𝒔. If you're feeling confused and overwhelmed about how to do all of this, you're not alone. Trust me, your designs can make a real difference :) 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 → Talk to real users. Understand their pain points. But also, grab coffee with the marketing team. Learn what those metrics mean. You'd be surprised how often a simple chat can clarify things. 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 → Sketch it out, literally. Where are users dropping off? Where are they getting stuck? This visual approach can reveal problems you might miss otherwise and which screens you need to tackle. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱 (𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗦)→ We've all heard this before, but it's true. A clean, intuitive interface can work wonders for conversion rates. If a user can't figure out what to do in 5 seconds, you might need to simplify. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 → Trust isn't built by security badges alone. It's about creating an overall feeling of reliability. Clear communication, consistent branding, and transparency go a long way. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 → Transform mundane tasks into engaging experiences. Progress bars, thoughtful micro-animations, or even well-placed humor can keep users moving forward instead of bouncing off. Remember, engaged users are more likely to convert and return, directly impacting your key metrics. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 → Set up usability tests to validate your design decisions. Start small - even minor changes in copy or button placement can yield significant results. The key is to keep iterating based on real data, not assumptions. This approach improves your metrics and also sharpens your design intuition over time. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹 → While it's tempting to create something totally new, users often prefer familiar patterns. Research industry standards and find data around successful interaction models, then adapt them to address your specific challenges. This approach combines fresh ideas with proven conventions, enhancing user comfort and adoption. Metric-driven design isn't about sacrificing creativity for numbers. It's about using data to inform and elevate your design decisions. By bridging the gap between user needs and business goals.
