A simple pallet could just become the smartest object in your supply chain. 📦 GS1's new RFID standard TDS 2.3 introduces a concept called SSCC++, and it fundamentally changes what a pallet tag can do. Here are the 7 key enhancements it brings, in plain language: 1️⃣ Pallets can now "phone home" The RFID tag on a pallet no longer just holds a number. It holds a live web address. Scan it anywhere in the world, and you get instant access to real, up-to-date information about that pallet, without needing to be connected to the shipper's systems in advance. 2️⃣ One source of truth for everyone Instead of pushing documents and data to every trading partner separately, suppliers now maintain a single authoritative data endpoint. Partners access what they need, when they need it. Less duplication, fewer disputes, cleaner handoffs. 3️⃣ Ready for the EU Digital Product Passport Europe is requiring products to carry a digital record of their origin, composition and sustainability data. SSCC++ is the first RFID standard that can support this at the logistics unit level, something that simply wasn't possible before. 4️⃣ Richer data on every case and carton Batch number, expiry date, net weight, this kind of extended product data was already being encoded in RFID tags. SSCC++ now makes all of it accessible via the web, not just at the scan point. 5️⃣ Harder to steal, easier to recover A pallet of spirits or infant formula that goes missing can now be identified by anyone with a reader, police, insurers, secondary market operators. Ownership and origin resolve instantly from the tag itself, with no access to proprietary systems required. 6️⃣ No new hardware needed This is not a rip-and-replace initiative. The dock door readers, tunnel antennas, and handheld scanners already deployed in most warehouses and distribution centers can support SSCC++ today. It's a software and standards upgrade, not an infrastructure one. 7️⃣ Small companies can now play too Until now, getting full supply chain visibility from RFID required complex integrations that only large enterprises could afford to build. SSCC++ lowers that barrier significantly, a small supplier with a basic reader setup can now participate in the same visibility network as the biggest players. The technology isn't new. RFID is at a tipping point. And it's why the "label created" mystery might finally fade away. Why is an older technology like RFID finally at a tipping point? One of the biggest logistics companies is going big on the technology. Earlier this year UPS announced that they are investing heavily into RFID technology and have rolled it out at 5,500 The UPS Store locations and have installed readers on 90,000 of their vehicles. It's already reduced their misloads by 70%. Embedding RFID chips into the regular shipping label is transforming the visibility into where your customer's package is and it's quite simple for shippers to get onboard. Different label, different printer. That's it. No process change or workflow difference. At SupplyChainPoint I got the chance to sit down with Jon Gurney Bell and Darryl Forbes from UPS who played a large part in this initial idea becoming a full on vision for what the future of parcel tracking looks like. With the amount of RFID technology UPS is investing in and will be investing in, I believe this will drive costs (one of the most prohibitive aspects of this technology in the past) even further down and open the door for many to start using this technology more regularly, even on lower cost items. You can’t build a Digital Twin 👬 on a shaky foundation. I love this visual representation of a Digital Twin Solution Structure. It highlights a critical truth in industry 4.0: your AI and Analytics are only as good as the data feeding them. In many environments retail, logistics, and manufacturing RFID is the unsung hero of the "Digital Infrastructure" and "Object Digital Twins" layers. Why? UPS deployed RFID labeling at all 5,500 UPS Store locations. But UPS’s RFID rollout is more important for enterprise retailers than most people realize. These locations are now processing about 1.3 million packages per day with RFID labels. This isn’t just a scanning upgrade. It’s a structural shift in chain-of-custody visibility, and it will directly impact loss claims. Historically, a meaningful percentage of “lost” shipments weren’t truly lost. They were visibility failures: • Missed scans • Custody gaps • Delayed event reporting • Manual exception handling RFID materially increases scan density and reduces dependency on human touchpoints. That means fewer tracking black holes, and fewer ambiguous loss claims. My expectation: • Minimal short-term impact (rollout + stabilization period) • 10–15% reduction in loss claims within 12 months • 25–35% structural reduction over ~24 months • Then a plateau Why the plateau? Because once scan-gap losses are compressed, what remains are true operational failures: theft, misdelivery, fraud, labeling errors, bad address data. RFID improves visibility — it doesn’t eliminate risk. For enterprise retailers, this creates three strategic shifts: Loss-claim rates will likely trend down, but scrutiny will trend up. Better visibility means weaker claims will be denied faster. Time-to-resolution should compress, which improves working capital and customer experience. Claims operations will shift from “prove it happened” to “prove liability.” The real opportunity isn’t just fewer claims. It’s using higher-fidelity event data to: • Identify high-risk nodes in your network • Predict stuck shipments earlier • Reduce premature “lost” filings • Improve carrier accountability RFID is not a magic bullet. But it is a meaningful step-change in data quality. The retailers who benefit most will be the ones who adapt their claims workflows to the new visibility reality, not the ones who keep operating like it’s still a barcode world. Our pilot with ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions) in Glasgow started with a practical problem. ACS processes 45,000 garments a week - resale, rental, refurbishment, repair. Without real-time visibility across that system, data gaps can create inefficiency, lost items and limited ability to make decisions at scale. By giving garments a unique digital identity through embedded #RFID and uploading that data to Avery Dennison's connected product cloud atma.io, ACS could track products in real time across every stage of the journey, and check-in time fell by 90%. What interests me most is what the data reveals. Flow-through rates. Repair frequency. Which materials hold value longest. Many conversations about end-of-life focus on recovery.
