    A reality check for anyone who needs it:    (We all do, from time to time)   If you’re running on empty, everything suffers.    → Creativity drops. → Work slows down. → You get snappy, tired, and worn down.   And that’s not just stress.  That’s burnout creeping in.   So you need to make the effort to protect yourself.   Here’s how:   1) Set Boundaries ↳ Log off when your workday ends. ↳ Don’t let work bleed into your evenings and weekends.   2) Schedule Non-Negotiable Breaks ↳ Block 10–15 minutes between meetings. ↳ Step away. Clear your head. Guard that time. 3) Track Your Workload Weekly ↳ Keep an honest log. ↳ Spot the overload before it crushes you.   4) Say No Without Guilt ↳ Protect your time. ↳ If it’s not urgent or essential, let it wait - or delegate it.   5) Stop Overcommitting ↳ You’re not meant to carry it all. ↳ Do your job well - but stop trying to do everything. 6) Prioritise Sleep and Rest ↳ You’re not a robot. ↳ Sleep matters.     Google Scholar recently got a major upgrade and it can be a game-changer for researchers If you've ever spent hours down a research rabbit hole, clicking through dozens of papers to find the ones that actually answer your question, this one's for you. Google Scholar Labs can fundamentally change how we search academic literature: ✅ Semantic search Finally! You can now search by concept, not just keywords. Ask questions in plain English like "how does sleep affect memory consolidation?" instead of guessing the exact terms authors used. The system understands what you're asking, not just what you're typing. ✅ AI summaries of papers Get the gist of any paper in seconds. No more reading through 20 pages just to realize it wasn't quite what you needed. These summaries highlight key findings, methods, and relevance to your query. ✅ Search session history Keep track of your research journey. We've all lost that perfect paper we found three days ago. Now your search sessions are saved, so you can pick up where you left off. This is particularly exciting for early-career researchers, interdisciplinary teams, and anyone trying to stay current outside their narrow specialty. The barrier to entry for literature reviews just dropped significantly. A few thoughts on what this means: We're moving from "keyword archaeology" to actual knowledge discovery. But (and this is important) AI summaries are a starting point, not a replacement for reading the actual papers. Always verify, always dig deeper on anything you'll cite or build upon. I've been testing it this week, and the semantic search alone has saved me hours. Found connections between fields I wouldn't have discovered through traditional keyword searches. By Erika Hall 👏🏽. 🚫 Research questions are not interview questions. 🚫 You can’t just ask people what you want to know. ✅ The key to good research is finding good questions. ✅ You won’t find them until you admit you have no answers. ✅ Establish clarity first: what you need to know, and by when. ✅ Before brainstorming ideas, brainstorm useful questions to ask. ✅ Keep a running list of relevant questions for entire company. ✅ Turn highest priority questions into UX research projects. ✅ How you phrase questions shapes what you can learn. ✅ Set goals: real-world check, find bottlenecks, explore ideas. ✅ Explain what data you need to be confident in your decisions. ✅ Explain how you will gather data, timelines, roles and costs. 🚫 Spot and flag decisions that are based on guesswork. ✅ Research methods are ways to answer your questions. ✅ Choose methods that will give you the data that you need. ✅ Good research is always rooted in the past, not the future. ✅ Keep adding emerging questions to the list of known unknowns. As Erika notes, too often companies invest an incredible amount of effort in research, just to leave it in a research repository on SharePoint, never to be touched or used. Look ahead how you will document, present and integrate your insights. Set timelines, roles, metrics and a reporting schedule. Companies typically block research not because there isn’t enough time or money, but because they think it’s expensive, time-consuming and will cause disruptions. Asking questions is inherently threatening to authority, and management often fears being undermined or questioned. There is always time and money for research. You can always learn something useful within whatever time and budget is available. Address high-priority questions first. Help teams integrate insights. Establish relationships. Flag assumptions. Track the impact of your work. Start with a small commitment, then grow: slowly but steadily.     🔬 Week 5: Rethinking Research Incentives - Why we need to reward outcomes, not just outputs Universities talk a lot about impact. But we still reward outputs. Grants won. Papers published. Citations tracked. These metrics matter, but they’re proxies, not purpose. If we want researchers to create meaningful change, we need incentives that reflect the outcomes we value. Here’s where the disconnect lies: 1️⃣ Outputs ≠ Outcomes A journal article is an output. A policy change or a new diagnostic tool is an outcome. Yet promotion, reputation, and reward systems still focus overwhelmingly on outputs. 2️⃣ Misaligned metrics distort behaviour Researchers do what is rewarded. If we measure quantity, we get more of it. But impact often comes from depth, collaboration, and engagement, none of which fit neatly in a citation index. 3️⃣ The costs of performativity Chasing the wrong targets adds stress, discourages creativity, and crowds out public-good research that doesn’t scale easily. It also undermines trust and authenticity within institutions and with communities. So what’s the alternative? Here are some ideas: ✅ Introduce outcome-based narratives into promotion and internal reviews ✅ Create dedicated pathways for practice-based, policy-engaged, and community-led research ✅ Provide structural incentives for impact: support staff, time, recognition, not just funding ✅ Celebrate a broader definition of success, especially for early-career researchers This isn’t about replacing traditional outputs. It’s about rebalancing the system so that researchers feel empowered to pursue what matters, not just what counts.     Burnout is not a badge of honour (it’s a warning light). Most researchers are taught to “push through” exhaustion, guilt and Sunday panic as if they’re proof of commitment. But the real career impact comes from calm, consistent work you can sustain for years – not heroic all‑nighters that quietly destroy your motivation. In my 15 years of publishing 80+ papers and leading £9m+ in projects, the pattern is always the same: the most successful people are not the ones who suffer the most, but the ones who protect their energy the most. They set limits on the system before the system breaks them. Here’s the shift I wish I’d made earlier: 1. Treat your time like lab space. You wouldn’t let random people dump equipment on your bench; don’t let random tasks fill your calendar. Block 2–3 focused “research blocks” per day and protect them like an experiment booking. 2. Make expectations explicit, not assumed. Burnout loves ambiguity. Ask your supervisor or PI, “What does ‘good enough’ look like for this paper/experiment this month?” Then agree on concrete, realistic milestones instead of silently moving goalposts in your head. 3. Shrink the unit of progress. When you’re exhausted, “write the paper” is impossible. “Draft a rough Results paragraph” is doable. I still run my own work this way: embarrassingly small, clearly defined tasks that I can finish even on a low‑energy day. 4. Build one small, non‑academic routine. A 20‑minute walk, gym session, or coffee with a friend at the same time each day creates an anchor that reminds you you’re a human first, researcher second. My best ideas have come during these “non‑work” moments. 5. Ask for support early, not heroically late. Every time I’ve seen someone crash, they were “fine” right up until they weren’t. A short, honest conversation with your supervisor, GP, or counselling service now is far better than a forced break later.     Safety Innovation Advent: Day 6 - Practice research to inform your practice In the lead-up to Christmas, I’m sharing an insight, activity or practical tip each day to help you innovate in health and safety. Today’s tip: Research, critique, and summarize the evidence for your health and safety processes Today’s tip is inspired by Punk Rock Safety Episode 19, where Ben Goodheart, Ph.D. David Provan, and Ron Gantt remind us of the importance of researching the evidence for our practice. As health and safety professionals, we should strive to be evidence-based practitioners, grounding our work in solid research. Yet, when working with cutting-edge innovation; where evidence is often lean (or not very good), we also need to experiment, conduct ethnographic research, and creatively draw on existing knowledge to drive progress. How to start: 1️⃣ Identify a safety challenge: Pick a topic relevant to your work, such as: - The effectiveness of Take 5 risk assessments. - Best practices for incident investigation methodologies. - Improving learning and engagement in e-learning packages. Choose our own 2️⃣ Search for evidence Go to Google Scholar or a trusted research database and explore recent studies or reviews. 3️⃣ Critique the research Evaluate the studies critically: Are the methods robust? Look at sample size, methodology, and validity. Are the conclusions practical? Assess how they apply to your field. What are the limitations? Note gaps in evidence or research contexts. 4️⃣ Summarise your findings Write a brief summary of your learnings, focusing on: - Key takeaways and practical applications. - Gaps in research or opportunities for experimentation. - How you might use these insights to inform or adjust your approach? Why this matters for safety innovation: Research helps us uncover trends, patterns, and gaps, driving smarter decision-making. By practicing research, we strengthen our ability to innovate while staying grounded in evidence. I’m currently exploring the state of the science for fatigue management and how wearable technology can help us better understand sleep and fatigue, blending research with experimentation to guide solutions. 🔧 Pro Tip: Share your findings with your team and the broader safety community. By sharing what you’ve learned, we can build our collective knowledge base and foster innovation in health and safety, together. Skeptical at first, I decided to give it a shot. 🧘♂️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬-𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: Instead of plunging headlong into my to-do list, I took a mindful pause. A few deep breaths later, I prioritized tasks based on urgency and importance. I also took short breaks to stretch, hydrate, and recalibrate my focus. Surprisingly, this intentional approach not only improved my productivity but also had a ripple effect on my team. By managing my stress, I created a positive atmosphere that encouraged open communication and collaboration. 🚀 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞: In the face of deadlines, take a moment to collect your thoughts.     “Show outcomes, not outputs!” I’ve given (and received) this feedback more times than I can count while helping organizations tell their impact stories. And listen, it’s technically right…but it can also feel completely unfair. We love to say things like: ✅ 100 teachers trained ✅ 10,000 learners reached ✅ 500 handwashing stations installed But funders (and most payers) want to know: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵? That’s the outcomes vs outputs gap: ➡️ Output: 100 teachers trained ➡️ Outcome: Teachers who received training scored 15% higher on evaluations than those who didn’t The second tells a story of change. But measuring outcomes can be 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲. It’s easy to count the number of people who showed up. It’s costly to prove their lives got better because of it. And that creates a brutal inequality. Well-funded organizations with substantial M&E budgets continue to win. Meanwhile, incredible community-led organizations get sidelined for not having “evidence”- even when the change is happening right in front of us. So what can organizations with limited resources do? 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: That study from Daystar University showing teacher training improved learning by 10% in India? Use it. If your intervention is similar, cite their methodology and results as supporting evidence. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀: Baseline and end-line surveys aren't perfect, but they're better than nothing. Self-reported confidence levels have limitations, but "85% of teachers reported feeling significantly more confident in their teaching abilities," tells a story. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Universities need research projects. Find one studying similar interventions and collaborate. Share costs, share data, share credit. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘅𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: Can't afford a 5-year longitudinal study? Track intermediate outcomes that research shows correlate with long-term impact. 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Let beneficiaries help design and conduct evaluations. It's cost-effective and often reveals insights that traditional methods miss. For example, train teachers to interview each other about your training program. And funders? Y’all have homework too. Some are already offering evaluation support (bless you). But let’s make it the rule, not the exception. What if 10-15% of every grant was earmarked for outcome measurement? What if we moved beyond gold-standard-only thinking? 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 “𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹”. We need outcomes. But we also need equity. How are you navigating this tension?
