    From a 0% base two years ago to 10% of ride shares in some US cities, the A.I. behind self-driving cars is maturing and coming down dramatically in price. Here's how it will overhaul cities and whole economies: WHERE WE ARE TODAY • Waymo is running fully driverless ride-hailing across San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta, logging hundreds of thousands of paid rides weekly. • Expansion is accelerating — half a dozen more US cities are in the pipeline, plus London as Waymo's first international market. • In China, Baidu's Apollo Go, Pony.ai and AutoX already operate large-scale services across Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenzhen, with Apollo Go delivering millions of rides per quarter. THE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION • The math is simple: no driver means labor cost per mile drops dramatically, and vehicles can operate far more hours than privately owned cars that mostly sit idle. • The average US household spends ~15% of its budget on vehicle ownership so "subscribe to mobility" will be very tempting for city-dwellers once per-mile prices fall at scale. • US downtowns dedicate 20-30% of land to parking. Reduced car ownership could unlock surface lots for housing, parks and offices — and convert curbside parking to wider sidewalks and bike lanes. SAFETY • For those of you concerned about autonomous-vehicle safety, Waymo's safety data show serious-injury crashes roughly ten times lower than human benchmarks. • Want third-party verification on that 10x safety improvement? Swiss Re found ~90% reduction in bodily-injury and property-damage claims for autonomous vehicles relative to human drivers. (Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, insurance premiums will become exorbitant for human drivers, pushing more and more people to go autonomous 🤔) RISKS • Cheap, effortless rides are a recipe for gridlock without smart policy. NYC's congestion charge cut incoming traffic ~10% in its first months, for example — dynamic "robotaxi fees" like this will be essential. • Labor impact is significant: ~500K taxi/shuttle jobs, ~500K bus-driver roles, and ~3M truck-driver jobs in the US alone. Reskilling pathways and transition plans are critical.     👋 Hello LinkedIn community 👋 Abu Dhabi just became the first city outside the US where you can open the Uber app, tap for a ride, and have a robotaxi with no one in the driver’s seat pull up in front of you. Uber and WeRide have flipped their Abu Dhabi service to fully driverless Level 4 operations, matching some UberX and Uber Comfort requests plus a new “Autonomous” option to WeRide robotaxis that now run without a safety driver onboard. What started in late 2024 as Uber’s first autonomous deployment outside the US, with human operators behind the wheel, has now evolved into Uber’s first fully driverless operation beyond American borders and it is happening in the UAE. The launch is live today in carefully mapped zones on Yas Island, a 12‑square‑mile playground of wide avenues, F1 track traffic patterns, and dense tourist demand that makes an ideal “living lab” for large scale AV rollouts. Behind the scenes, this leap was unlocked by a new federal permit for fully driverless commercial service and Abu Dhabi’s first operational licence for a driverless robotaxi fleet, granted through the Integrated Transport Centre and local operator Tawasul. This is not a one‑off demo; it is the opening move in a much bigger map. WeRide and Uber already expanded earlier phases of the service to cover around half of Abu Dhabi’s core districts, and the new driverless operations are slated to push beyond the initial Yas zone into more of the city’s center including areas like Al Reem and Al Maryah as additional approvals land through 2025 and beyond.     Driverless taxis feel like an inevitability, but there are really three critical “whens” to watch—plus a couple of special considerations: When will they operate at scale? Phoenix and San Francisco already have commercial deployments, but truly reaching national or global coverage remains a challenge—especially given the lengthy R&D timelines involved. When will they be profitable on a per-ride basis? Even at moderate scale, can they cover costs like software, insurance, maintenance, and steep vehicle depreciation? Achieving positive unit economics is no small feat, and the unusually large up-front investments only heighten the pressure. When will they recoup their massive R&D costs? Billions of dollars have been poured into developing driverless technology over a surprisingly long time to market. Turning a profit on each ride is one thing; justifying years of heavy investment is another. What happens when competitors flood in once the technology matures? As autonomy becomes more reliable, expect more companies—both established and new entrants—to enter the market, cutting into margins and intensifying the battle for profitability. Driverless taxis might soon bring in revenue on a per-ride basis, but it’s far from guaranteed that they’ll build a sustainably profitable business—especially given the extended development cycle and massive up-front spending. Strong platform ecosystems with high demand density and rapid technology adoption create an environment where new mobility models are deployed under real market conditions.    It is also a market with a range of operating environments: highly dynamic ride-hailing markets coexist with evolving public transport systems. This creates a setting where autonomous mobility must prove itself under fundamentally different use cases.  In Los Angeles, MOIA America's partnership with Uber has started on-road validation as the next step toward launching rides on the Uber platform in 2026. This partnership brings thousands of autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles into a live marketplace with millions of users over the next decade. Furthermore, MOIA America has announced its partnership with Beep, Inc., aiming to bring autonomous mobility into public and micro transit systems across U.S. markets, starting in the Orlando region. This partnership follows a different logic: integrating autonomous services as a key pillar of evolving public transit networks in the U.S.. Over the next decade the project will integrate 5,000 autonomous ID. Buzz into transit projects across U.S markets. Two different approaches to mobility, both powered by MOIA’s turnkey-solution.  Ride-hailing is directly connected to high-demand channels, while public transport is a rapidly developing sector in the U.S. with autonomous mobility as an essential pillar. Both are needed to build autonomous mobility that adds value for users and is commercially viable.     Waymo in Talks to Raise $15 Billion at $110 Billion Valuation. The Robotaxi Leader Is Doubling Down. Waymo is in discussions to raise $15 billion in new funding at a valuation as high as $110 billion. That’s more than double its October 2024 Series C round of $5.6 billion at a $45 billion valuation. The Scale: Waymo now operates or is planning service in 26 markets globally. The company currently serves paid rides in Austin, San Francisco, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, with 14 million trips completed in 2025 and over 450k weekly paid rides. Expansion plans for 2026 include Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, San Antonio, San Diego, Washington DC, and the company’s first international market in London. The Validation: Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Waymo will “meaningfully” contribute to Google’s financials as soon as 2027. Waymo is transitioning from R&D project to a revenue generating business unit. A $110 billion valuation reflects investor belief this becomes a standalone profit center within 2 years. The Competitive Position: Waymo leads the US robotaxi market by a wide margin. Tesla launched branded robotaxi service in Austin and San Francisco, but vehicles still have had human drivers or safety supervisors for the most part. Waymo is the only company operating fully autonomous paid rides at commercial scale across multiple metro areas. The Capital Intensity: $15 billion reflects the reality that scaling autonomous fleets is capital intensive. Vehicle procurement, sensor suites, mapping infrastructure, safety operations, insurance, regulatory compliance, it all requires sustained investment before unit economics pencil. But Waymo’s trip volume suggests the model is working. 20 million total trips since 2020 with acceleration toward 450k weekly paid rides demonstrates real demand, not pilot programs. The Strategic Read: Google is betting Waymo becomes to transportation what Google became to search, the dominant platform that captures the economics of an entire category. At $110 billion pre money, investors are underwriting that thesis. The valuation implies Waymo eventually operates millions of autonomous miles daily across dozens of cities, capturing margin on every trip without driver labor costs. The Risk: Regulatory approval remains uncertain in many markets. Incidents, however rare, generate disproportionate headlines. Competition from Tesla, Zoox, and others could compress margins. But right now, Waymo is the only company demonstrating this works commercially at scale. Bottom Line: $15 billion at $110 billion valuation signals the market believes autonomous ride hailing transitions from science project to real business within 24 months.     🚗🤖 Waymo's Self-Driving Push Could Reshape Ride-Hailing Forever A recent Bloomberg piece caught my attention about how autonomous vehicles are moving from concept to reality, with Waymo expanding their driverless operations. This isn't just another tech story - it's a fundamental shift that could redefine how we move through cities. The efficiency advantage is real. Unlike human drivers who need breaks, navigate inefficiently, or work limited hours, autonomous fleets can operate 24/7 with optimized routing. Early data from Waymo's Phoenix operations shows they're already achieving better utilization rates than traditional ride-hailing services. Cost economics will eventually favor autonomy. While the upfront technology investment is massive, the elimination of driver costs - which typically represent 60-80% of ride-hailing expenses - creates a compelling long-term business case. This could make transportation genuinely affordable for underserved communities. Urban planning implications extend beyond transportation. Cities designed around parking lots and gas stations will need to reimagine their infrastructure. Fewer privately owned vehicles could free up valuable urban real estate for housing, parks, or commercial development. Europe takes a more measured approach. While US companies race toward full autonomy with billion-dollar investments, European cities are testing smaller-scale solutions. Berlin just launched a €9.5 million autonomous shuttle pilot with BVG and MOIA, focusing on specific routes rather than citywide deployment. Similarly, Austria's Postbus is collaborating with Baidu's Apollo Go on limited autonomous vehicle trials. This cautious, publicly-funded approach reflects Europe's preference for gradual integration over disruptive transformation. Integration challenges reveal different philosophies. The contrast is striking - American companies bet big on revolutionary change while European initiatives prioritize careful testing within existing public transit frameworks. Berlin's shuttle pilot specifically aims to complement, not replace, traditional public transport. This suggests two distinct paths toward autonomous mobility: the Silicon Valley "move fast and break things" model versus Europe's "test thoroughly and integrate safely" approach.
