    Choosing the correct security door or window switch is critical to system performance. The gap tolerance between the magnet and reed switch varies significantly between residential-grade and commercial-grade devices. Using the wrong contact is one of the most common causes of nuisance and false alarms. Residential contacts are not designed for high-traffic commercial openings, steel doors, hollow metal frames, or wide-gap requirements. Installing a light-duty residential switch on a commercial steel door will almost always lead to intermittent alarms. Steel surfaces can also influence magnetic field behavior. Ferrous materials may retain residual magnetism or create field distortion that affects reed switch alignment and sensitivity. If the contact isn’t rated for steel applications (or you fail to use proper spacers and wide-gap industrial contacts), you’re setting yourself up for service calls. Key considerations: • Surface vs recessed contact • Standard gap vs wide-gap industrial • Steel door / hollow metal frame compatibility • High-cycle commercial durability rating • Proper magnet alignment and spacing The most important step in intrusion system reliability is selecting the correct switch for the application.     I was interviewed on Fox32 Chicago Good Day Chicago about the recent trend of smash and grab crime victimizing businesses. I explained how a business can protect itself through a layered approach with physical security and security technologies working together. Starting on the outside, motion-activated flood lighting should be in place to illuminate the area, individuals, and vehicles. Video surveillance cameras using analytics that trigger an alarm if it detects a person or vehicle, especially in the middle of the night when the business is closed. Also, a speaker can be attached to the camera and announce commands, such as “no trespassing” or “911 is being contacted”. Additional security technologies include contact alarms for doors and windows, glass break sensors for windows, motion detection for interior space, and panic alarms for emergencies. A best practice-based security system links all systems together including intrusion detection devices, video surveillance cameras, and panic alarms. The business could consider improving security by linking all systems together, which would help law enforcement respond more quickly to an alarm. Additional physical security measures include reinforcing exterior doors with a steel anti-kick plates for door jambs, security bars, and dead bolts. Bullet-resistant glass or protective film for exterior windows that prevents glass from shattering, holds broken shards together, strengthens the structural integrity of a window, and/or reduces the likelihood of breakage and flying glass.     Fiber Optic Cable as Intruder Detection System. ✅️ Principle of Operation: 1️⃣ Signal Transmission: Fiber optic cables transmit light signals, usually from a laser or LED, through the core of the fiber. These signals travel in the form of light pulses, which are converted into data at the receiving end. 2️⃣ Sensing Mechanism: In an intruder detection system, the fiber optic cable is installed along fences, walls, or underground. The system detects disturbances or intrusions by monitoring changes in the light signal caused by physical interactions. 3️⃣ Disturbance Detection: When an intruder tries to climb a fence, dig near the cable, or tamper with it, the physical vibrations or pressure cause minute changes in the light signal. These changes are detected as: Attenuation: A reduction in signal intensity. Phase Shift: A change in the light wave's phase. Scattering: Variations in the light path caused by bending or stress. 4️⃣ Processing and Analysis: The disturbed light signals are analyzed by a Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system or other monitoring devices. Algorithms differentiate between normal environmental factors (e.g., wind or rain) and potential intrusions, reducing false alarms. 5️⃣ Alarm Generation: If the detected disturbance matches predefined intrusion patterns, the system generates an alarm and may provide the exact location of the intrusion using the time-domain reflectometry principle. ✅️Advantages of Fiber Optic Intrusion Detection Systems: Precision: Can pinpoint the exact location of an intrusion.     Combating Insider Threats Through Smart System Integration In today’s organizations, insider threats remain one of the most overlooked yet most dangerous security challenges. When an organization is not proactive, it risks losing sensitive information and compromising operations, not because of external hackers, but often from within. Security systems are not just for show. Their purpose and function should be fully utilized to enhance protection and efficiency. Too often, organizations rely heavily on personnel to perform tasks that integrated systems should handle automatically. That’s why the implementation of an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) should not stand alone. It must be linked with alarms, CCTV, and detection sensors to create a unified and intelligent response network. When these systems communicate and function as one, the results are immense, faster detection, quicker response, and reduced human error. The goal is simple: let technology do what it’s built to do, make security smarter, faster, and more effective.

    One of the biggest mistakes many small business owners make is believing that once they install CCTV cameras, their security problems are solved. Unfortunately, security does not work that way. Security is multifaceted. It is made up of different layers that work together to prevent, detect, delay, and respond to threats. CCTV is only one piece of the puzzle. In 2025, I had a friend in Kakamega called Nick who operated a cyber Cafe. Besides offering cyber services, he also owned a PlayStation 5 gaming section and sold various electronic items. One day, I visited his business to print some research documents. As I entered, something immediately felt different. The place looked empty. When I asked Nick what had happened, he told me thieves had broken into his premises. They had stolen three desktop computers and several other valuable items. Only one desktop computer remained. The loss was devastating. The most shocking part was that Nick did not have a CCTV system, an alarm system, or any form of electronic security. The business relied mainly on a security guard. Later, there were suspicions that the guard might have colluded with the criminals, although investigations were still ongoing. After listening to his story, I told Nick something every business owner should understand: "Security is an investment, not an expense." Many people invest heavily in stock, computers, furniture, and electronics but spend very little on protecting those assets. Once criminals strike, they realize too late that security should have been a priority from the beginning. I advised Nick to consider a comprehensive security approach: ✔ Install CCTV cameras to monitor activities and provide evidence. ✔ Connect the CCTV system to a monitoring controller or control room. ✔ Install an intruder alarm system. ✔ Work with a reputable security company. ✔ Collaborate with neighboring businesses to enhance collective security. The truth is that having CCTV cameras without monitoring or response capabilities is like owning a fire extinguisher that nobody knows how to use. The cameras may record the crime, but they may not stop it from happening. An alarm system adds another layer of protection. The moment an intrusion occurs, a signal is sent to a control room. Trained operators assess the situation and dispatch a response team. In many cases, the response team coordinates with the police to secure the premises before criminals can escape with property. This is the difference between merely recording a crime and actively preventing or disrupting it. Modern security relies on layers: physical security, trained guards, CCTV surveillance, alarm systems, access control, monitoring centers, and rapid response teams. When these layers work together, criminals face greater difficulty succeeding. Remember, security is not a single camera on the wall.
