    Opening Doors, Literally. Every few years, packaging takes a step forward. First the focus was protection. Then convenience reshaped the category. Materials are now changing the role packaging plays. That shift is being driven by new materials, social media culture and a generation used to instant activation. Packaging is moving beyond the role of a passive container, beginning to expand, heat, unfold or react to what's happening inside it. Self‑heating, self‑cleaning and self‑opening structures are moving from speculative concepts into real design conversations. Some people label this the next wave of smart packaging. In practice, it reflects a change in how materials are used. Structures can be designed to flex, open or transform when exposed to heat, pressure or moisture. The response sits in the behaviour of the material itself, where chemistry and geometry combine to create movement. This way of thinking underpins the work of the Stockholm studio Tomorrow Machine. For years, the team has worked with Swedish research group Innventia, experimenting with biodegradable composites made from everyday ingredients such as sugar and starch, and observing how natural materials respond to temperature. One outcome of that work is a self‑expanding bowl designed for hot food. As the contents heat up, the mechano‑active material bends and stretches in controlled ways, allowing the structure to unfold as the meal reaches serving temperature. What might appear sculptural is the result of engineered material movement. Structure and chemistry are matched so the pack opens at the right moment, without pull tabs, plastic films or added mechanisms. Examples like this suggest a different direction for packaging systems. Ready meals, fresh food and medical nutrition all rely on signals that indicate when something is hot, safe or ready to consume. When the material itself responds to those conditions, layers and components that once seemed necessary begin to fall away. Glass, Wood, Paper, Plastic bags, Clothes, Ceramic and Clay, Cardboard were used earlier for packaging. But, the trend, design, need have been changed. Modern packaging have included materials like Biodegradable Paper Boxes, Glass Jars, Reusable Tin Boxes, Plant-based Packaging, Compostable Cutlery, Seaweed-based Packaging, Mason Jars etc. Packaging In the Food delivery market, smart packaging is emerging as a game changer for food businesses, driving significant growth and enhancing customer loyalty. With platforms like Swiggy and Zomato serving millions of orders daily, consumers now expect more than just a hot meal—they’re looking for an immersive experience that starts the moment the food arrives. Innovative packaging not only helps businesses differentiate themselves but also allows them to justify premium pricing. Studies suggest that eco-conscious packaging leads to increased consumer trust, with sustainable brands seeing up to 20% higher retention rates. As environmental concerns grow, particularly in countries like India, where plastic waste reaches over 9 million metric tons annually, companies are transitioning to eco-friendly alternatives. Brands like Pot Pot and Aflatoon have turned packaging into a strategic business asset by offering reusable containers and reducing plastic waste. The result?     If you want to stay on the cutting edge of packaging, it’s still here. China – Day 2: Today we took a quick trip to Hong Kong to walk the Cosmopack show, one of the best places to see where beauty and skincare packaging is heading. A few big takeaways that stood out: ⸻ 1. 🎯 Factories have become hyper-specialized Gone are the days when one factory “did everything.” Suppliers now operate more like creative studios, each with a narrow, highly refined specialty. Innovation, cost, speed, scale, etc. You don’t “tour a factory” anymore. You interview them. Like you would a designer or an agency. Finding the right fit has never been more important. ⸻ 2. 🔂 Mono-material packaging is finally real This is one of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve seen. A single material for every component — including the pump spring. No more disassembling parts. No more “please remove pump before recycling.” It means true curbside recyclability for beauty packaging, which has historically been one of the hardest categories to recycle properly. A genuinely meaningful step forward. ⸻ 3. 🚀 Glass is evolving fast Custom shapes, textures, and decoration techniques are improving quickly, without premium tooling costs. Beauty brands get: - lower mold fees - higher perceived value - more design freedom The pairing of low cost + luxury feel is a combination we’ll see more brands lean into. ⸻ 4. 💧Waterless formulas are gaining traction Better for the environment. Better for travel. Better for eliminating microplastics. These concentrated, water-free formats can be used for everything from cleansers to detergents and they open the door to lighter, smaller, more sustainable packaging footprints. ⸻ If you want to understand where packaging is heading you need to go upstream and China still reigns supreme in customization, innovation, and sustainability.     New Episode of Fresh Takes on Tech. This week I sat down with two companies that are part of the Packaging Innovation Program, bringing practical, scalable innovation to the produce industry—one at the point of freshness, the other at the point of packaging.  Joaquín Fisch of NAT4Bio is developing microbial-polymer coatings and adjuvants that can significantly improve post-harvest disease control while reducing chemical use. What stood out is how intentionally their solutions are designed to fit into existing workflows—a true plug-and-play approach that makes adoption easier for growers and packers.  Jerold Zwas of PakItGreen is tackling single-use plastics with fiber-based, recyclable packaging that runs on today’s machinery. Their work shows how sustainable packaging can become a realistic option when it’s engineered for the operational realities of converters and packers.  Both conversations reinforce a theme I see across our industry: innovation succeeds when it’s scientifically strong and operationally feasible.     Laundry cubes. Dishwasher tablets. Compressed coffee balls or disks. These forms demonstrate how product design can eliminate wasteful packaging, not just tweak it. Innovations like these reduce plastic—no more bulky jugs, single-use "pods," or measuring cups—while reducing overall packaging material. Concentrated products are also lightweight, so less structural reinforcement is needed in the packaging. Other advantages: a smaller packaging footprint and lower transportation emissions. What I like about this kind of #DesignThinking is that, instead of asking, "How do we make this plastic recyclable?" there is a shift in thinking to, "How do we design the product so that plastic is unnecessary?" Of course, this isn't possible with all products, but with cleaning goods and other mostly water-based items, this kind of design feels like common sense. And if you can make single-serve coffee without creating tons of pod waste, why wouldn't you? Let's think outside the box together.     July 1st is here, and ready or not, we're officially crossing over the midway point of the year. This is a great chance to reflect on the trends of the first half of the year. I continue to be motivated by the significant transformations the packaging industry is undergoing to enhance sustainability. Recent insights highlight several innovative trends: City-Scale Reuse Programs: Moving beyond pilot projects, cities are now driving reuse initiatives, fostering infrastructure that supports economies of scale and greater consumer engagement. Seattle's Reuse program is a pioneering example, creating shared collection, transportation, and washing systems for food and beverage containers. Plastic Reduction and Replacement: Governments and brands are ramping up efforts to eliminate single-use plastics. With regulations like the EU’s ban on certain plastic products and the US's numerous local bans, there's a concerted push towards alternative materials and improved recyclability. Post-Purchase Interaction with Smart Tags: Packaging is evolving to include QR codes and and sensor technologies, making it easier for consumers to access sustainability information and reorder products. This technology not only enhances consumer convenience but also aids in efficient sorting and reuse processes. Reduction of Air/Space in Packaging: To meet sustainability targets, brands are optimizing packaging sizes to minimize empty space, thereby reducing carbon emissions and shipping costs. This “right-sizing” approach is already being adopted by major players like Amazon. Reverse Vending and Supply Chain: The resurgence of returnable packaging systems like LimeLoop is driven by new reverse vending technologies. These systems incentivize recycling and reuse, significantly increasing the return rates of materials like glass and plastic. These trends underscore the packaging industry's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The real disruption isn't coming from regulations. It's coming from market forces we're already seeing in motion. Three trends that will accelerate faster than most predict: Bio-based barrier coatings will capture 35% market share by 2027. This isn't just forecasting – we're tracking a 127% year-over-year increase in R&D investments in this space. Supply chain transparency will become non-negotiable. 82% of major retailers are already implementing technology-enabled material tracking.     We're officially in the TikTok era of beauty. Formula innovation plateaued, so brands are putting everything into packaging that goes viral. At Marpipe, we're seeing this shift hit product catalogs hard. The formula game is basically solved. Every brand has access to the same labs, same ingredients, same manufacturing. Quality differences are marginal at best. So brands moved the competition to packaging: the only thing that still creates content momentum. Korean brands are leading this charge. Take Dr. Althea's grinding balm, literally built for content creation first, skincare second. The mechanism itself becomes the hook. The unboxing becomes the ad. The product IS the social moment. Then you've got utility innovation: Fenty's solid perfume, Simihaze's stackable cosmetics, Fluff's refillable compacts, Guerlain's ornate lipstick cases. Each is designed to trigger specific content formats. The L'Occitane case study is perfect. 30-year-old hand cream. Nothing changed about the formula. Went viral because creators filmed how much product they could squeeze out before the tube collapsed. The packaging created the trend, not the product. What this means for catalog strategy: your product photography needs to show the packaging interaction, not just the product. Static flat lays don't cut it anymore. Show the squeeze, the twist, the stack, the refill mechanism. You should be treating packaging as content infrastructure. Ask: "What about this product creates a filmable moment?" Then, build catalog imagery around that moment, not just clean product shots.
