🌱 Sustainable Design Patterns And UX Toolkits. With practical guidelines, frameworks, tools and resources to focus on what matters and remove what doesn't (scroll down for the newsletter) ↓ ✅ Always choose the lightest mode of communication. ✅ Encourage the reuse of existing templates and presets. ✅ Auto-delete after 365 days what hasn’t been used once. ✅ Discourage users from PDF exports in favor of URLs. ✅ Always provide audio-only/transcript for videos. ✅ Be intentional with default settings for your users. ✅ Highlight key insights to create understanding faster. ✅ Skip unnecessary pages: drive users to results faster. ✅ Establish an archiving and deletion policy. ✅ Show filters/presets in autocomplete, not just keywords. ✅ Nudge users to delete old files for 10% off that month. ✅ Encourage and reward users for trying out dark mode. ✅ Aim to reduce session duration instead of increasing it. ✅ Question font weights, stock photos, parallax, 4K-videos. ✅ Question collected data, if it’s used and when it’s deleted. Digital sustainability is often seen as a technical concern for engineers. We mostly speak about optimization of assets and server efficiency. In fact, we rarely explore sustainability from the perspective of UX. But as designers we have a huge impact on how sustainable or wasteful our digital experiences are. Most of our environmental impact happens on our user’s devices, so we can help our users by reducing waste and focusing on what matters. Typically, when we, as designers, speak about sustainability, we mean at least 4 facets of it: 🌱 Reducing waste ← In publishing, heavy visuals, animation, PDFs 🌻 Deleting content ← Un-publishing outdated, misleading content/flows, 🐝 Maximize reusability ← UI components, flows, processes, templates, 🌳 Sustainable defaults ← Help people make more sustainable choices Individual actions drive changes at scale, but they need a momentum. And often that momentum comes through small changes: new default settings, reduced time on task, or showing key insights, rather than all data. That’s also just good usability that can have tangible impact for users and businesses. Most importantly: whenever possible, hold on to your devices as long as possible, and encourage your customers to do the same. If you’re an architect, place makers or designer, study an old Indian school building. Observe the top view. Why? A simple C-shaped plan. Nothing flashy. Just thoughtful design. That C-shaped layout wasn’t just an architectural decision. It solved multiple problems at once. • A central courtyard the heart of the school. • A better assembly space. • A safer play area within sight. • A place for learning, celebrations, conversations, sports, and community. • Long verandas protected classrooms from the sun and rain. • High ceiling, big windows, Cross ventilation and sloping roofs for natural cooling. • Easy supervision on students • Campus with clarity instead of confusion. The structure wasn’t asking to adapt to it. It was designed around behavior and observation. Observation of climate. Observation of students behaviour. Observation of how people move, gather, learn, and interact. Remarkably these were designed without AI, simulations, or advanced software. Somewhere along the way, I feel we’ve started celebrating complexity. -We design for photographs instead of everyday life. -For statements instead of stories. -For novelty instead of longevity. Recently, I came across a small packaging optimization case that was quite inspiring. 👏 It was about packaging a foam roller.With the traditional method, securing the product required a large amount of air column bags, bubble wrap, and additional fillers to keep it stable inside the box. When you open the carton, you see a pile of #plastic.Yes, the product is protected — but the resource consumption is significant. By upgrading the internal box structure, simply redesigning how the carton holds the product, the same foam roller can now be securely fixed in place — without using any plastic cushioning at all. No extra materials.Just a different way of thinking. This made me realize again:Sustainability doesn’t always start with big slogans.Sometimes, it begins with a small detail. Optimizing a #packaging structure may mean: Reducing single-use plastic Lowering shipping weight Improving packing efficiency Cutting overall costs And when this kind of improvement is scaled across production,its impact multiplies.True sustainable design is not just about using “eco-friendly materials.”It’s about reducing unnecessary materials in the first place. Here are a few of my favorites: 🌿 Atri – A Sustainable Oasis (Sweden) by Naturvillan blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor life. Enclosed within a glass envelope, this circular home uses solar energy, greenhouse systems, and biological cycles to create a regenerative living environment. Atri produces food, captures heat, and stabilizes its own microclimate—demonstrating what’s possible when homes behave like ecosystems rather than machines. 🏘️ UN17 Village (Denmark) by Sweco Architects is a landmark in climate-conscious community design. Through biobased materials, low-carbon concrete, passive strategies, and integrated biodiversity corridors, the project aligns with all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It’s one of the most ambitious examples of sustainable residential development anywhere in the world. 🌿 Maativan Retreat (India) by Studio Matter celebrates vernacular intelligence and regenerative living through rammed-earth construction, passive cooling, and nature-integrated design. Surrounded by forest, the project minimizes operational energy while maintaining thermal comfort without mechanical systems. Its material palette—earth, timber, and lime—supports carbon reduction and local craft traditions. As the The World Bank Bank notes, “bioclimatic and passive building strategies can reduce energy loads by up to 80% in warm climates.” Maativan Retreat shows how residential architecture can harmonize with climate, land, and culture, offering a restorative model for future homes. Across these nominees, a clear pattern emerges: 🔹 Homes designed as resource-generating systems 🔹 Neighborhoods centered on biodiversity and human wellbeing 🔹 Passive strategies reducing the need for mechanical energy 🔹 Materials chosen for circularity and low carbon The future of housing is not simply low-impact.
