Across the globe, climate change is revealing critical vulnerabilities in energy systems— particularly in countries that depend heavily on hydropower, as the frequency and intensity of droughts continue to increase. Nowhere is this challenge more pressing than in Africa, where prolonged droughts are putting at risk the reliability and resilience of power systems. Yet, there is also opportunity. Countries such as Kenya have demonstrated that bold investments in solar, wind, and geothermal energy can drive lasting change. The call to action is continent-wide. Zambia is a powerful case in point. In 2024, the country faced its worst drought in over four decades. With more than 80% of its electricity sourced from hydropower, the resulting energy shortfall disrupted healthcare, education, food systems, and livelihoods. Power outages lasting up to 21 hours a day impacted millions—highlighting the urgent need for change. That’s why Zambia’s shift toward a diversified, renewable energy mix is not just a climate strategy: it’s a lifeline. With support from UNDP and partners, Zambia is promoting productive uses of energy through solar-powered distributed renewable energy systems, reaching rural and remote communities with minigrids and crucially, making the energy transition inclusive for women and underserved groups. When women gain access to reliable, clean energy, they gain the power to lead businesses, feed communities, and strengthen resilience where it’s needed most. Cooking fuel now flows through pipelines, just like LPG, but without the volatility of global markets. What stands out is not just the innovation, but the shift in mindset. I’ve been reflecting on the countless conversations about Africa’s energy future—and I keep seeing a narrow focus on electricity. Renewable energy is essential—but true sustainability goes far beyond power generation. It starts with people, communities, and the land they live on. That’s why I’m sharing this today. At Nopal Renewable Energy Corporation (NREC), we are not coming in with an outside solution—we partner with Africans to create homegrown solutions. Together, we transform degraded lands into thriving green farms. These farms generate renewable energy, yes—but they also restore ecosystems, create jobs, foster local enterprises, and provide food and income security for rural communities. The results are transformative. Communities gain the tools and opportunities to thrive, reducing conflict, building hope, and creating foundations for generations to come. Renewable energy lights homes. Land restoration and community empowerment light the path to lasting prosperity. This photo illustrates one of our projects in Namibia, where we are turning desert land into a productive green farm for bioenergy—expanding the world’s agricultural capacity while empowering local communities. Lessons for Zambia from South Africa’s Community Solar Rollout As Zambia accelerates efforts to manage its power crisis, there are practical lessons to draw from South Africa’s recent launch of a local solar electricity plant in Madimbo and Mabvete villages near Musina. The project, commissioned by Eskom and opened by Minister of Electricity, is modest in scale but powerful in impact: over 600 households connected, solar-powered street (Apollo) lights installed, and free Wi-Fi rolled out at government facilities. Beyond lighting homes, the intervention directly supports small businesses, safety, and digital access — essentials for local economic activity. The key lesson is not technology — solar is well understood — but deployment philosophy. Energy solutions were taken directly to communities, close to demand, reducing pressure on the national grid while delivering immediate social and economic benefits. This decentralised approach builds resilience, especially during periods of load reduction or hydrological shocks. For Zambia, constituency-level and community-scale solar projects could play a similar role: powering households, markets, agro-processing, cold storage, and public services while cushioning the national system. Importantly, such projects create visible benefits that citizens can feel, helping rebuild trust during difficult energy transitions. As Zambia moves full throttle on energy reforms, the takeaway is clear: big impact does not always require mega-projects. Well-governed, locally anchored solar solutions can light villages, unlock small businesses, and strengthen resilience — one community at a time.

Across West Africa, millions of people live without stable electricity—especially in regions facing conflict, drought, and state neglect. In this episode, Stanley (Karana) Olivier, founder of KOC Bridges, joins me on The Africa Program Podcast to explain how simple, locally built wind turbines are helping communities generate not just energy, but also cooperation, agency, and resilience. Karana describes his unique approach: enter villages with no predetermined solution, listen to every member of the community, and help them articulate their own vision for the future. Through this process, groups that rarely speak to one another: farmers, pastoralists, youth, women – end up working side by side to build wind turbines using recycled materials sourced from local markets. After Hurricane Maria left the island without power for months, Puerto Rico reimagined its entire energy system. Today, the island operates the nation's largest behind-the-meter virtual power plant, with over 81,000 customers enrolled and 70,000 home batteries working together as a coordinated grid resource. The results speak to what's possible when utilities embrace distributed energy. During summer peak demand, this network delivered 48MW back to the grid with an impressive 82% participation rate. What makes this remarkable is the equity focus. Two years after Hurricane Helene tore through western North Carolina, the region's rebuilding plan runs on solar. One system, operated by Duke Energy, kept the entire town of Hot Springs powered through the storm while the surrounding grid went dark. North Carolina's Department of Environmental Quality has since put $5 million toward 26 microgrid projects across the storm's path, 24 stationary and 2 mobile, in partnership with regional nonprofits. The broader model is called a resilience hub: a school, fire station, or community center fitted with solar panels and battery storage that can operate independently of the main grid. RMI's research on the recent hurricane seasons found these hubs, part of a growing national network, kept power, refrigeration, and communication running in communities that would otherwise have gone dark for days or weeks. For rural properties and farms specifically, the same principle applies at a smaller scale. A property with solar and storage is able to take itself off the emergency responders’ immediate response list. Meaning, the focus can shift to saving those working with unreliable gas networks. That's not a policy statement. It's a function of how the system is built. Two years out from Helene, the lesson holding up across the Southeast is simple: power sources closer to the point of use fail less often, and recover faster when they do.
