    How This Space Tech Startup Secured $5.5M (Without Giving Up Equity). Last year, I invested in Raven Space Systems. They developed a novel way to 3D print aerospace hardware: • Faster • Cheaper • More efficiently Before pursuing VC money, they secured $5.5M through grants from NASA, Air Force, and The National Science Foundation. This was pure capital for R&D to: • Validate their technology • Access specialized facilities • Build government & commercial credibility Incredible benefits, yet not without challenges. Applications are competitive, time-consuming, and often come with restrictions on fund usage. 6 steps for capital-intensive startups to access non-dilutive funding: 1) Find the Right Grant Programs → Focus on SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) → STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) programs. → These offer billions annually in non-dilutive funding for early-stage R&D. Key Agencies: NASA, NSF, DoD, (AFWERX), USDA, and others. 2) Prove Your Tech Solves a Big Problem → Funders want mission-critical solutions over "cool" innovations. → Eg: NASA funds projects that improve performance in space exploration. → Use data or case studies to demonstrate the urgency of the problem → And the effectiveness of your solution. 3) Develop a Clear Proposal → Specific R&D milestones → Measurable outcomes → Commercialization plans Align your proposal with the funder's mission and values and highlight how your project advances their goals. 4) Leverage Strategic Partnerships Strengthen by collaborating with universities, labs, or prime contractors. E.g: Raven partnered with the University of Oklahoma for material testing and technical validation. Partnerships mean specialized equipment and critical expertise. 5) Engage with Grant Officers → Reach out to program managers before applying → For insights on aligning your application with agency priorities → Clarify any ambiguities and tailor your proposal accordingly 6) Iterate And Improve → Treat rejections as opportunities to learn → Many startups win grants on attempt 2 or 3 → Refining on feedback can significantly improve success rates After validating their tech with grants, Raven then raised VC to: • Scale manufacturing • Build sales teams • Enter new markets Validate with grants.     A 15 year old built a smart sock that helps stop Alzheimer’s patients from wandering at night. Meet Kenneth Shinozuka. He built SafeWander - a wearable sensor system that alerts caregivers when a patient gets out of bed. Here’s how he did it: 1. Watched Alzheimer’s slowly affect his family During a walk in Japan, his grandfather suddenly got lost. That was the family's first sign of Alzheimer's. As the disease got worse, nighttime wandering became a constant challenge. 2. Got the idea from one small observation One night, Kenneth noticed the exact moment his grandfather's foot touched the floor. That made him think: what if a pressure sensor inside a sock could alert caregivers instantly? 3. Taught himself how to build the technology He started learning: ↳ Circuit design ↳ Sensor engineering ↳ Bluetooth technology ↳ Mobile app development Using textbooks, research papers, and YouTube tutorials, he built the first prototype himself. 4. Turned the idea into a wearable product He placed a pressure sensor inside a sock. The moment a patient stepped onto the floor, an alert was sent straight to the caregiver's phone. 5. Tested the product on his own grandfather The device detected 900+ wandering cases with a 100% success rate over a year of testing. Soon after, care facilities across California started testing it too. 6. Turned it into a product used by caregivers worldwide After that, he made SafeWander available for sale. Funded entirely by his $50k Google Science Fair prize and a $50k grant, he launched it commercially in 2016. And the device soon caught national attention. He later became: ↳ A TEDx speaker ↳ A White House Science Fair exhibitor ↳ A recognized young innovator in healthcare technology What I like about Kenneth's story is that he didn't start by trying to build a startup.     🧑💻For grant managers, tech is now a career-defining decision. 🧑💻 Grantmakers tend to think about their tech as an investment in their programs. And it is. But today, choosing the right tech can have a profound impact on your career trajectory. I recently connected with four different grant managers who credit their decision about their grant management software with setting them up for promotions or new roles. 👉 Jeffrey Howell has been with the United Way Greater Triangle for over six years, starting as a program leader. Recently he was named CEO, and he called out how important it was to choose the right grantmaking software. “If Submittable wasn't there to help me excel, I don't know if I'd be here!” he says. 👉 A policy lead for a state agency was tasked with leading a massive relief program for local businesses. She chose a GMS that allowed the team to automate reviews and deliver funds quickly. After delivering hundreds of millions of dollars to thousands of constituents, she was promoted to a director role. 👉 One large foundation spun off a new program to support innovative ideas. What was supposed to be a one-time project proved so successful with the right project management, the foundation made a permanent entity to continue the work. Three team members rose from associate level into director roles as the program grew. 👉 A program coordinator at a local arts school used her experience with a great GMS to get a new role with a national arts organization. The best part? She knew exactly how to step up and solve the new organization’s most persistent problems. As a former CIO, my decisions around tech have always had an outsized impact on my career. But today, I see that becoming the norm for so many functions across the philanthropic sector. The grant managers who want to step into leadership roles have to show they can get this right.     How I Won 5 International Grants as a Startup Founder (And How You Can Too) When I started Fertility Dost, I didn’t have deep pockets or investors on speed dial. But what I did have was a mission to solve a real problem — and that’s what helped me win multiple international grants from: 🇩🇪 The DO School, Germany 🇺🇸 TechCamp, USA 🇬🇧 FemTech Labs, London 🇺🇸 Pollination Project, USA … and more. If you’re a founder trying to scale with limited resources, here’s a roadmap I’ve followed and it works 👇 1. Show REAL Impact — Not Just an Idea Grants don’t go to the smartest pitch deck. They go to startups solving a clear problem and creating impact. Highlight: • Who you’re helping • What measurable change you’re making • Why your solution matters now 2. Find the Right Grant (It’s All About Alignment) Don’t randomly apply. ✔️ Look for grants aligned to your domain, geography, and SDG goals ✔️ Be active in startup communities and incubators where such opportunities are shared ✔️ Track grants like: DO School, Pollination Project, She Loves Tech, FemTech Labs etc. 3. Fill That Application Like It’s Your Fundraising Pitch Most startups lose out because they rush the application. Fill every section with clarity and conviction Don’t copy-paste jargon — be authentic Show your numbers, vision, and commitment Many grants ask for a video — keep it: • Short (under 2 mins) • Focused on the problem and your solution • Human and real, not overproduced 4. It’s Not Just About the Money The real value lies in: Mentorship from global experts Access to tools like AI platforms, CRMs, consultation hours Collaborations (One of my grants doubled in value because I co-created a product with another founder from the cohort!) 5. Stay Engaged (Even If You Don’t Win) Some of my best partnerships came from grants I didn’t win! I showed up, connected with mentors and founders and those conversations became collaborations, client leads, even alternate revenue streams. Final Tip: Apply with a learning mindset. Don’t just chase the grant money. Chase the growth, the guidance, the network. Grants are not charity. They are investments in your potential to create change.     Sometimes, the best-fit grant doesn’t look like a fit at all until you ask the right questions. You have to follow the thread and listen closely to your community. That’s how a $40K win turned into something much bigger for one of our longtime clients. Last fall, they mentioned a grant from a major tech company. It had a strong equity lens, but was focused on data. At first glance, I didn’t think it was the right fit because their work is service-oriented, not data-heavy. But when they brought it up again this year, I decided to personally take it on. In our discovery conversation, they mentioned something almost in passing: having volunteers sit in on court proceedings and noting racial disparities in sentencing, tone, and treatment. I reviewed the funder’s history and saw a pattern: Court Watch programs. That was our thread. We built a proposal around the work already happening: teachers, law students, folks with lived court experience showing up week after week as volunteers. The grant would allow them to formalize the program, pay volunteers, intervene when bias is witnessed, and collect data to push for change. Grant Writers for Health turned it around in two weeks. Our client brought strong support letters and local media coverage. And they got the grant! 🎉 This funding will allow them to pay those volunteers to continue observing, intervening, and gathering data that can drive policy and legislative reform. This taught me that the “perfect fit” doesn’t always show up on paper. But we can ask questions, find the throughline, and build something powerful from what’s already there.     Tambra Clark, Ed.S. spent years teaching third grade before one role change, becoming her school's technology teacher, reshaped her entire career. Clark grew up in Joliet, Illinois, the oldest of six siblings in a single-parent household. A high school class project paired her with a fourth-grade teacher, and that experience sealed it: she was meant to be an educator. She studied elementary education at Joliet Junior College, then moved to Birmingham, Alabama for Miles College. She taught third grade in Birmingham City School District, then spent eight years at Robinson Elementary, including a stint as technology teacher, a role she said changed everything. She later earned master's degrees in curriculum and instruction, and in library science. In 2016, Clark became library media specialist and tech coordinator at South Hampton K-8. Through a partnership with Ed Farm, the school's library became a full Library of Innovation in 2022, with iPads, iMacs, a 125-inch monitor, drone technology, and a studio for the student-led podcast Bulldog Talk on the Edge. 🎙️ The results followed fast: 🏆 In 2025, Southampton students won $10,000 in Samsung technology in the ALTEC Innovation Challenge for addressing period poverty and diaper insecurity by developing an app called the Hygiene Hub. 🌪️ In 2026, students became top 10 national finalists in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow for a solar-powered tornado alert system, traveling to Washington, D.C. and bringing home $50,000 in Samsung technology. Clark put it simply: "It has been a fun ride." In 2025 she was promoted to BCSD technology integration facilitator and now co-leads the district's AI governance committee. She's also board chair of Birmingham Women in Technology.     While out and about with Faiz Muhammad, away from our desks and screens, we often find ourselves having the most meaningful conversations, exploring how Microsoft technologies are empowering organisations to achieve their goals and realise their ambitions. Most people think Microsoft technologies are only good for corporate productivity and business processes. They are missing the bigger picture. We were thinking about the impact of technology on non-profits, I can't help but be amazed at how Make-A-Wish (Non Profit Charity) were able to revolutionise their entire operation using Azure and Microsoft Fabric. The challenges they faced with manual reporting were real - their reporting processes were manual and took significant time, creating different figures that staff had to spend hours reconciling. These inefficient workflows were holding them back from their incredible mission of helping more children. Using generative AI and AI assistants for first drafts, blog posts, strategic plans and meeting notes meant teams had more time for marketing materials and engaging with more people directly. What's particularly exciting is how Azure Machine Learning enabled them to build a predictive model for their fundraising team that analyses donation data to identify supporters who have higher likelihood of increasing their contributions to Make-A-Wish. This allows the fundraising team to concentrate their efforts on developing relationships with the highest potential for generating revenue needed to expand their capacity to grant additional wishes. In essence, this implementation represents a perfect blend of technology and purpose, where every data point and insight directly contribute to granting more wishes to children with critical illnesses. The success of this initiative demonstrates how modern technology solutions can amplify the impact of mission-driven organisations.     "We didn't think we stood a chance." That's what the Executive Director told me when we first spoke in March. Her organization: A small community health center serving 3 rural counties Their dream: Expand mental health services for underserved populations The problem They'd been rejected 4 times by different funders Here's what we changed: Instead of talking about what they WANTED to do... We showed what they'd ALREADY accomplished with limited resources. Instead of generic impact statements... We featured Maria (not her real name) -a patient whose story demonstrated the gap in services. Instead of a complicated budget... We created a phased approach that showed financial sustainability. Result: $125,000 awarded in June. Services launched in September. 89 new patients enrolled. The lesson? You don't need to be the biggest organization. You need to be the most compelling storyteller. Grant reviewers fund results, not potential. If your organization keeps getting rejected, the problem might not be your mission. It might be your message.
