    Soft &thin eggshells in poultry can be caused by various factors, 1. Nutritional Deficiencies - Calcium Deficiency – Inadequate calcium levels in the diet lead to weak shells. - Vitamin D3 Deficiency – Essential for calcium absorption. - Phosphorus Imbalance – Required in proper ratio with calcium (Ca:P = 2:1) for shell formation. - Low Protein & Amino Acids– Lysine and methionine influence shell strength. -Solution: - Supplement layer feed with 3.5-4.5% calcium (limestone, oyster shell, or calcium carbonate). - Ensure adequate Vitamin D3 (3,000-5,000 IU/kg of feed) for calcium metabolism. - Maintain a balanced Ca:P ratio (2:1). - Provide high-quality protein sources with essential amino acids. 2. Aging Layers - Older hens (beyond 72 weeks of age) naturally produce thinner shells. Solution: - Cull older hens that consistently lay weak-shelled eggs. - Provide extra calcium and vitamin D3 for older layers. Final Recommendations: 1.     University of Georgia scientists tested two feeding methods on 1,778 chickens for 60 weeks. Their findings show that daily feeding produces better results than the common skip-a-day approach. Lower Feed Costs with Daily Feeding 💸 The numbers tell a clear story. Birds fed every day consumed 6.853 kg of feed per bird. Skip-a-day birds needed 6.997 kg. This 2.6% difference adds up to real savings across your entire operation. Weight Gains Stay Strong 💪 Daily-fed birds outperformed skip-a-day birds at every stage. The weight advantage started early and continued throughout rearing. By week 10, daily-fed birds were 4.5% heavier. This pattern held steady through weeks 15 and 20, with birds maintaining 3.5% and 4.4% weight advantages. Egg Quality Improves Too 🥚 The benefits don't stop at the end of rearing. When these birds became laying hens, those raised on daily feeding produced superior results. Their eggshells were stronger during the final laying period (weeks 46-60). The hatch rate difference was significant: 94.1% for daily-fed birds versus 93.1% for skip-a-day birds.     A midnight feeding strategy, also known as a midnight lighting or "midnight snack," involves a 01 to 2-hour period of light in the middle of the dark cycle to stimulate feed and water intake. This practice improves feed intake, egg weight, and eggshell quality by providing nutrients, especially calcium, during shell formation. It's particularly beneficial in hot climates, where it encourages birds to eat in cooler conditions, and should be gradually phased out when no longer needed to avoid negative impacts on behavior and feed intake.  The thyroid and parathyroid glands play critical roles in layer birds by regulating metabolism, calcium homeostasis, and egg production. Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) control metabolic rate, energy utilization, and thermoregulation, which are essential for optimal egg production and feed efficiency, while hypothyroidism can impair laying performance and shell quality. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) ensures calcium availability for eggshell formation by mobilizing calcium from bones and enhancing intestinal absorption in synergy with vitamin D3. Midnight feeding, a practical management strategy, provides calcium and nutrients during the critical nighttime eggshell formation period, improving shell quality, reducing bone calcium depletion, and stabilizing egg production. Eggs that are cracked, misshapen, or contaminated will never give you the hatch rates you need. #Pro Tip: Always collect eggs frequently and store them in clean, cool environments. This helps maintain hatchability and reduces the risk of contamination. 🌞 Light and Nutrition: A Perfect Balance What goes into your birds’ diet and how they’re exposed to light directly impacts egg quality. Bigger eggs lead to healthier chicks, with more residual yolk, better hydration, and stronger immunity. #Nutrition: Make sure your birds are getting the right nutrients—specifically, #linoleic acid and key amino acids, which are crucial for egg size and chick health. #Light: Proper light stimulation at the right time can lead to larger eggs. But don’t overdo it! This helps prevent bacteria from entering through the shell. 🚫 Floor Laying? Not Ideal! Floor laying can cause dirty eggs, which reduces hatchability. But don’t just scrub them harshly! Scraping or using too much pressure can force dirt into the egg. Instead, gently wash them with water at 40°C to avoid damaging the shell’s protective layer.     A laying hen produces one egg per day. That egg contains about 2 grams of pure calcium in the shell alone. Without enough calcium in feed, hens lay soft-shelled or fragile eggs that break during handling and transport. Layer feed needs 0.8-1.2% calcium carbonate to ensure consistent eggshell strength. It's the same for dairy cows. They lose massive amounts of calcium daily through milk production. If calcium isn't replenished, cows develop milk fever - a metabolic crisis that can be fatal. For poultry, larger calcium carbonate particles do double duty: they provide calcium AND act as grit, helping chickens grind food in their gizzards. No teeth means they need help digesting. In heat stress conditions above 30°C, laying hens need 2.68% or more calcium in their diet to maintain both production and shell quality. Calcium carbonate isn't just a mineral.
