Summary

Fan engagement techniques are strategies used by sports teams, music artists, and entertainment brands to create stronger connections with their audiences, motivating fans to participate actively and feel a sense of belonging. These methods go beyond simple attendance, aiming to transform fans into loyal community members through interactive experiences and personalized outreach.

  • Prioritize interaction: Create opportunities for fans to participate in polls, contests, and live chats so that they feel included in the conversation and invested in your brand or event.
  • Personalize experiences: Use loyalty programs, exclusive content, and meet-and-greet sessions to tailor interactions that make each fan feel recognized and valued.
  • Embrace digital platforms: Connect with fans on social media, apps, and community forums, sharing behind-the-scenes content and encouraging real-time feedback to keep them engaged wherever they are.

I had a look at Luminate's 2025 Midyear Music Report, and here’s my key takeaway for anyone working in global music or emerging markets: Afrobeats is down in the U.S. For the first time in years, Afrobeats shows a decline in U.S. On-Demand Audio (ODA) streaming volume. This dip may likely be due to: - Market fatigue - Fewer mainstream crossovers - Shifting listener preferences If you're working with Afrobeats talent targeting Western markets, it might be time to: 1. Explore cross-genre collaborations Markets like India (78% local streams), Brazil (75%), and Nigeria (61%) have deeply loyal local listening habits, but they also share cultural overlaps that allow for genre-fluid music. Think: Rema’s "Calm Down" charting in India, Latin Afrobeats dominating LATAM playlists, Burna Boy + Travis Scott’s baile funk fusion track. These are early signals, but deeper impact may come from collaboration across these markets, not just borrowing sounds. 2. Focus on superfan platforms Platforms like Twitch, Reddit, Discord, WhatsApp, and even podcasts are becoming real homes for deep fan-to-artist engagement, especially in genres like Afrobeats, Latin, and K-pop. Here’s what’s interesting: #Reddit: Afrobeats is one of the top genres here, and fans love vinyl. Think limited collector drops & fan-first merch. Real opportunity to lean into tangible fandom. #Discord: Not huge yet for emerging markets, but early adopters could build something special with Afro House or Amapiano as Electronic is the #3 genre here. #Twitch: Afrobeats ranks high. If you're not thinking short-form and live engagement yet, now’s the time. Twitch is built for storytelling, behind-the-scenes content, and real-time artist access. #WhatsApp: This surprised even me: Afrobeats and Latin fans over-index here. With features like music in status updates and Channels, plus traditional messaging, WhatsApp is now a full-on fan engagement tool. Especially powerful in Africa, LATAM, and Asia. #Podcasts: 37% of podcast listeners are more likely to stream a new release within its first week. 59% of those listeners are Afrobeats fans. Rolling out music via interviews, deep dives, or exclusive premieres is a powerful and overlooked strategy. Community is the new algorithm. If you want your music to travel and stick, go where fans talk, not just where they stream. 3. LATAM and Southeast Asia for expansion If Nigeria is proudly local & Ghana is most open regionally (25% regional streams), then growth lies in more musically open markets, like: #UAE: 92% of streams come from outside the region #Philippines: 62% of streams are from outside Asia #Peru: 36% of streams come from global sources These are ideal launch pads for artists and labels looking to cross borders, build fanbases, and experiment with genre blending. TL;DR: Emerging markets aren’t emerging anymore. They’re leading. #MusicInsights #EmergingMarkets #LuminateData #GlobalMusic #Afrobeats #MusicStrategy

Engaging and retaining the fan base is key for football clubs. Why? Without active fan participation, clubs experience: ☑ A drop in attendance  ☑ Reduced merchandise sales ☑ Missed opportunities to connect with sponsors and investors 👉 Engaging fans is crucial for: ☑ generating revenue ☑ creating an electric atmosphere ☑ motivating players ☑ achieving success both on and off the pitch ✅ The Risks Imagine... ☑ The impact of a half-empty stadium on match days... with chants reduced to whispers. ☑ A once vibrant atmosphere that loses its allure... failing to inspire players. ☑ Dormant social media accounts that receive minimal engagement... generating little buzz. ❓ The consequences? ❗ Potential sponsors and investors hesitate to associate with a club lacking active and enthusiastic supporters. Without an effective fan engagement strategy... 👉 the football club risks falling behind while competitors thrive on their passionate fan communities. ✅ The Solution To unlock the full potential of a football club and cultivate an engaged fan base, executives should: 1️⃣ Embrace Digital Platforms ☑ Use the power of social media: Connect directly with fans. ☑ Share exclusive content: Behind-the-scenes footage, player interviews, and match previews. ☑ Encourage active participation: Initiate discussions, run polls, and ask questions that ignite fans' passion and deepen their emotional connection to the club. 2️⃣ Personalised Fan Experiences ☑ Tailor experiences to individual fans through loyalty programs, exclusive perks, and recognition of their contributions. ☑ Organise meet-and-greet sessions, signed merchandise giveaways, and personalized messages from players or club legends. ☑ Make fans feel valued and recognized, fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty that transcends mere spectatorship. 3️⃣ Community Involvement ☑ Extend the club's reach beyond the stadium by engaging with the local community. ☑ Organize charitable initiatives, youth football programs, and grassroots events that showcase the club's commitment to its supporters. ✅ The Results This kind of involvement: ✔ enhances the club's reputation ✔ fosters a positive image ✔ forges stronger connections with fans who feel proud to be part of a socially responsible club ✅ Final Thoughts These strategies will transform fan engagement, leading to: ✔ Increased attendance ✔ Higher merchandise sales  ✔ An improved social media presence ❗ This heightened level of engagement will attract sponsors, investors, and partnerships, increasing the odds of success of the club on and off the pitch. #footballbusiness #linkedinsports #strategy

Sharing sponsor press releases on LinkedIn is like shouting into the void. No one cares, and your audience is already scrolling past. Want to connect with clients and fans instead of boring them? Here’s your 70-20-10 formula for engaging content: 1/ 70%: Teach People What Problems You Solve This is your bread and butter. Explain how you help sponsors see real ROI or create campaigns that fans actually love. Example: “We ran a campaign that boosted fan engagement by 300%. One fan called it ‘the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.’” Pro tip: Keep it simple. Keep it simple. Think: "How would I explain this to my grandma?" Bonus points if you can throw in stats or stories to make your points hit harder. 2/ 20%: Focus on Your Client’s Audience Great sponsorships resonate with fans, not just companies. Share activations that created a real impact. Example: “A VIP paddock contest made a fan’s lifelong dream come true. His mom cried, and now he’s our biggest ambassador.” Why it works: This proves you’re not just about logos on cars—you’re about experiences that matter. 3/ 10%: Be a Human People connect with people, not buzzwords. Share your personality and let them see the real you. Example: “I tried cooking paella for the first time. It ended in flames, but the comments turned into a debate about the perfect recipe.” Your LinkedIn should feel like a conversation, not a corporate slide show. Use the 70-20-10 rule, and you will stand out as the sponsor exec people actually want to work with. Now, go have some fun. And please, stop reposting press releases. For example, we spoke to Mark Norris last year about DP World and their partnership with McLaren Racing.

Ever thought of getting the Rolland Garros feel without flying all the way to Paris? I'm not talking VR or AR here. But about a collaboration between Fancode and SonyLIV at the recent French Open. To provide fans with an immersive, digital experience of the event. Gone are the days when live sport meant one camera angle and one commentary. Today fans pinch-zoom, pick their commentator, and vote on polls while the ball is still in the air. SonyLIV brought in the high-quality live coverage of each match. FanCode integrated its interactive technology directly within the SonyLIV platform. So that viewers could now select camera angles, review serve speeds, change commentary languages, and participate in real-time polls. All this without leaving the stream or downloading a separate application. For the viewers, the end result was a seamless, single-screen experience and unprecedented control over how they consumed the event. Here's why it matters: 👉🏼 Viewers stay 25 % longer when they can play along. 👉🏼 Advertisers pay more for clicks than eyeballs. Interactive streams deliver both. 👉🏼 Regional language toggles pull Tier-2 fans who once skipped pay-TV. 👉🏼 The same tech stacks can power cricket, kabaddi, even cooking shows next. A few takeaways for you as a business leader: 🎾 1. Put customers in the driver’s seat. Whether it’s camera angles or checkout steps, the more control they have, the longer they stay. 🎾 2. Borrow strength through partnerships. Don’t reinvent tech. Instead, team up with specialists who are already into it. 🎾 3. Personalise at a fast click. Language toggles, custom views, tailored offers - whatever suits your business. People stick around when the product adapts to them instantly. 🎾 4. Measure interaction, not just attention. Clicks, polls, shares and toggles reveal true engagement. Raw eyeballs are yesterday’s vanity metric. 🎾 5. Prototype fast and iterate faster. Start with small interactive experiments. Then rapid tweaks. Which of these five would you bring into your business? P.S. Every week, I bring to you a #cx trend from India. Repost if this was useful. ♻️ #customerexperience #customercentricity #india

I never go directly to my seat when I arrive at a stadium. Instead, I ALWAYS take a lap around and in my head I'm filling out a checklist, which looks something like this: ✅ What fan activations do Corporate Sponsors have? Are they engaging? ✅ Are Corporate Sponsors grabbing a fan's attention? ✅ How easy is it for fans to access F&B? Are there long lines? ✅ Are there fun activities for fans? Any surprise & delights? ✅ Are people helping fans navigate to their seats & with whatever else they need? I put myself in the shoes of both the fan and the arena / team. Fans spend their hard-earned money to attend games, so how can the arena / team make it the BEST possible experience for those fans as possible? I had the opportunity to attend a New York Islanders game a few weeks ago at the UBS Arena. The islanders and the Oak View Group have done an INCREDIBLE job of being very attuned to the fan experience from arrival through departure. 🏒 Direct train from NYC to the stadium...Islanders' website had clear directions for fans coming from multiple areas. 🏒 People helping fans getting off the train to the stadium, and then a ton of people within the stadium helping fans navigate and educate them on ticket packages 🏒 Ice rink outside the stadium for fans to skate on pre-game 🏒 Meet & Greet with Islanders legend for fans that arrived early 🏒 Many F&B options which kept lines short, and the team/Oak View has partnered with Viam to make sure fans never have to wait on long lines again 🏒 Zambonis were FUN. See the pic of The HEINEKEN Company's branded zamboni. Another one was built like a hayride with a lot of space for fans, opposed to most zambonis only having room for 1-2 fans 🏒 Community engagement: in-between periods the local youth team played at center-ice The list goes on-and-on. What are other teams you've seen do a great job with their fan / in-stadium experience? Any best practices? #sports #sportsbusiness #sportsbiz #fan #fanexperience #partners #corporatesponsors #sponsors #innovation #stadium #events #bestpractices

Too many companies miss the mark on early-stage fandom building. They treat fans like consumers but expect them to carry the weight of promotion, discovery, and hype. They hyper-focus on platforms when the real magic happens in how fans connect across them. They try to manufacture loyalty through parasocial interaction when sentiment is what really sticks. A few truths from the fandom trenches: — “Super fans” isn’t a term fans made up. We’ve been Stans, fangirls, oomfs, moots, and countless other things long before marketing decks caught on. Stop rewriting it to make it sound corporate. — Super fans aren’t some special economic class. People who love something will find a way to support it if it’s worth it. But you need to give them multiple ways to show up — including passive support like YouTube content, Patreon, or giving them community-building tools when VIP tickets aren’t in reach. — Artists being good people goes farther than any campaign. You don’t have to speak on every issue, but how you treat your team, your peers, and your fans creates culture. Stop seeing your fanbase as a funnel to sell through. Start seeing it as a web they build together. #fandom #musicmarketing #fanengagement #communitybuilding #brandstrategy #musicindustry #digitalstrategy

  • Bravo to Jesse Cole and Emily Cole co-owners of the Savannah Bananas, who put on a master class in customer engagement for their largest crowd ever in their 8 year history, 42,000 people at National Park. The gates opened at 4:30 for a 7 pm start and for 4.5 hours they shined with thoughtfulness and fun. Here are 5 main takeaways. 1) See a problem, try to bring a solution. The problem the Coles saw was baseball games were too boring for the average fan. So, they started to change it with hundreds of ideas such as fan caught foul balls = an out (that keeps everyone attentive for sure). Did it work? During other games, people leave early. At this game every fan stayed until the end. Amazing! 2) Know your audience. Savannah Bananas 🍌 had intentionally something for all age cohorts. They highlighted those with military service / public service. They had opportunities for boys and girls to get on the field and be highlighted / the Nana Bananas showed up (60+ year young dancers) / Multiple Dad Bods of all shapes and sizes were on staff to pump up the crowd / and some real baseball talent too 3) They engaged the audience. Had us standing up, clapping, cheering, getting out our phones to create a starry night. Constant engagement. 4) Real time trying something new. Instead of being predictable they were showcasing new ideas in the moment. It happened to be an idea where they found two fans named “Bill” amongst the crowd and had each team physically “pass a Bill” from player to player in a relay (only dropping the Bills a couple of times) in honor of DC. 5) The Owners engaged directly with the fans. This was one of the biggest surprises as we were walking in Emily Cole was greeting people on the main concourse. As an owner, they didn’t have to be there amongst the crowd but that is how they seek feedback and share appreciation. To say I was impressed is an understatement. Thank you Bananas for this awesome experience! Anyone else see a game and want to add to the list of 5? #engagement #innovation #fansfirst

Unlocking Super Bowl-Level Engagement 🏈 The Super Bowl isn’t just a game; it’s an experience🌟 It captivates millions with suspense, rewards loyalty with epic moments, and keeps fans engaged from the kickoff to the commercials. What makes it so addictive? Gamification principles in action. Lessons from the Super Bowl to Gamify Your Strategy: 1. The power of anticipation: The Super Bowl builds excitement long before the game starts—teasers, predictions, and countdowns drive buzz. Use this in gamification by creating challenges or pre-event activities that build anticipation and keep your audience hooked before the “main event.” 2. Rewards beyond the game: Fans don’t just tune in for touchdowns—they stay for experiences, whether it’s a halftime show, giveaways, or memorable ads. In your platform, layer unexpected rewards and varied incentives to make participation more engaging, even outside of the core product. 3. Create tribal loyalty: Super Bowl fans pick sides, wear jerseys, and chant slogans. Why? Because belonging to a “team” is emotionally powerful. Leverage this by implementing team-based challenges or leaderboards that tap into collective pride and competitiveness. 4. Celebrate the underdog story: The Super Bowl thrives on narratives of unlikely heroes and comebacks. Create personalized progress tracking so every user feels like the underdog rising to victory. Celebrate milestones in meaningful ways to foster commitment. 5. Spectacle and surprise: From jaw-dropping plays to surprise celebrity appearances, the Super Bowl thrives on unexpected moments. Infuse gamified surprises like hidden bonuses or limited-time challenges that keep users coming back for more. 6. Second-screen Integration: The Super Bowl dominates not only TVs but also social media feeds. Gamification thrives when it connects with users across platforms. Encourage users to share achievements, challenge friends, or engage in community forums for broader reach. 7. Make everyone feel like a winner: Even if your team loses, there’s always a reason to celebrate—an incredible play, a clever ad, or a halftime surprise. Design your gamification strategy so that every user walks away feeling rewarded, no matter the outcome. The Super Bowl teaches us that engagement is about more than just the product; it’s about the journey, the community, and the thrill of participation. Whether you’re building a loyalty program, app, or product experience, Game on 🌟 #gamification #engagement #loyalty #retention Captain Up

Here’s something we’ve learned running thousands of activations: The same old prizes? Fans stop noticing. It’s called prize staleness—and it’s rooted in how the brain works. Our minds are wired to seek novelty. Once we’ve seen something a few times—signed jerseys, BOGO offers, free tickets—we mentally group it, tune it out, and move on. You become just another contest. But introduce something unexpected? You trigger a neurological response. Dopamine kicks in. The brain perks up. Suddenly, attention is back—and so is engagement. We’ve seen this firsthand. One brand switched up how they framed their prize—same budget, totally different presentation. Participation jumped 400%. The key? Prize creativity. Not necessarily bigger. Just fresher. More fun. More you. So no—you don’t need to ditch the jersey. But maybe it’s not “Win a signed jersey.” Maybe it’s: - Jersey + Scoop, but that player picks the flavor of the scoop - Player signed shoe for a foot healthcare sponsor - A toilet mug for a sanitation company with the jersey (we did this, huge results. Fans loved the mug more than the jersey) Unexpected. Branded. Memorable. Fans don’t remember contests. They remember moments. Build those, and watch your results multiply.

The BEST #marketing out of Williams Racing this season This is going to be an easy one, everyone talks about it, everyone knows, Williams absolutely crush at Fan Engagement. From physical to digital to social, they’re serving up fans with amazing experiences. Physical: 👋 Williams Fan Zones are no doubt one of the best fan engagement methods the team has. With the show car, sim racing, Kraken grid pass, and so much more they provide an experience no matter what team you’re a fan of. 👋 Williams also works hard for special events, such as their car launch this season at the PUMA store in NYC. Fans turned up massively before the season had even started and by having it open to fans at a store, this really increased accessibility for fans of all types in the city - it wasn’t just journalists or a photo on Instagram. 👋 Special sponsorship activations are huge too. The upcoming Stevens activation with the Arkansas Museum of Art will bring F1 to audiences that normally don’t get any such experience. Digital: 📲 Mobile apps 📲 Badge collections 📲 Pit wall competition 📲 Quizzes and Videos 📲 AR garage tour experience Williams delivers on multiple levels with digital engagement. Having mobile apps not only for their team but also for their drivers as well increases ways to reach audiences. 📱 Badge collections for each race get you in the habit of always coming back 📱 The pit wall hub has challenges for each race and gives you your world ranking in the competition 📱 Quizzes and videos range from week to week with a unique offering for each race. The AR garage tour experience on the app is completely unique as well. Not only do you tour around the garage but also collect items related to the team and drivers All partnered with brands such as Kraken Digital Asset Exchange, Gulf Oil, Myprotein, Komatsu, and so many more Social media: Everything from Team Torque to the Vowels Verdict hits. Williams does well with hitting multiple segments of their fanbase: 💙 Traditional long term fans who love the technical side 💙 New fangirls who want to learn and see the silly content 💙 Middle ground fans who want entertainment but not technical facts 💙 Halfway fans who don’t watch every race but like to see updates Social Media from Williams hits it all - the top of funnel marketing that every team needs, because if you don’t hit awareness and develop the relationship, they’ll never get to the bottom funnel. And here’s the data to prove they’ve done well: (since Oct. 2023) 📈 ~19% increase in Williams Instagram following 📈 ~65% increase in Williams TikTok following 📈 ~16.7% increase in Alex Albon’s Instagram following 📈 ~48.7% increase in Alex Albon’s TikTok following 📈 ~62.9% increase in Logan Sargeant's Instagram following 📈 ~81.7% increase in Logan Sargeant's TikTok following From physical, to digital, to social Williams Racing and FanCapital lead the grid in fan engagement. What’s been your favorite thing from Williams this season?
