    The modern office is inflexible, inaccessible, and incredibly rigid. We build fixed environments and expect human beings to do 100% of the adaptive work. But a thriving garden is a collection of diverse microclimates. Even when neurodivergent professionals successfully advocate for an accommodation, it is often deployed as a static, "one size fits all" solution. For example, you might complain about blinding fluorescent lights. Facilities replaces them with a warmer bulb. But if you cannot control the brightness the environment is still rigid. We need to move beyond static accommodations (Universal Design) and embrace true environmental agency (Adaptive Design). Inclusion is the radical act of normalizing choice. These supports should be available to everyone without a "special request." They are infrastructure, not favors. Below is our Adaptive Workspace Audit. 1/ The Lighting Gradient The Barrier: Flickering fluorescents trigger sensory flooding. Static UD Fix: Installing warmer overhead bulbs. Adaptive Design: Providing dimmable, individual task lighting at every desk for complete microclimate control. 2/ The Acoustic Sanctuary Barrier: Open plan noise creates constant hypervigilance. UD: Issuing noise canceling headphones. AD: Building optional quiet zones and pods where silence is the structural default, not a wearable accessory. 3/ The Ergonomic Pivot Barrier: Static furniture forces a "one size fits all" posture. UD: Buying one expensive ergonomic chair for a complaining employee. AD: Making sit-stand desks the default, validating the biological need for constant, user directed movement. 4/ The Visual Perimeter Barrier: High traffic sightlines break focus every few seconds. UD: Moving the distracted employee to a dark corner. AD: Supplying modular partitions and movable greenery so the user can dynamically curate their own visual perimeter. 5/ Thermal Individualism Barrier: Centralized climate control ignores fluctuating biological needs. UD: Adjusting the centralized thermostat by two degrees. AD: Providing personal desk fans and heated pads, granting absolute agency over personal thermal regulation. 6/ The Restorative Cove Barrier: Having no reset space forces people to retreat to bathroom stalls to breathe. UD: Building a generic "wellness room" that inevitably becomes a storage closet. AD: Creating dedicated, low sensory pods designed exclusively for nervous system de-escalation. 7/ Movement Permission Barrier: Corporate culture pathologizes pacing or stimming during deep thought. UD: Allowing the employee to take extra breaks. AD: Integrating under desk cycles, standing mats, and normalized walking paths to validate kinetic processing. A workspace should be a customizable conservatory, not a restrictive cage. Normalizing choice is the ultimate trellis so we can each be individually supported how we need.     Understanding complex systems changed how I think about design, strategy and futures work. It’s also the fourth and final ellipse in my strategic design model. Complex systems have some unique qualities: - Cause and effect aren’t linear - Even observing the system changes its nature - You can only really make sense of what happened in hindsight Those properties matter more than most design models acknowledge. A lot of design and strategy work assumes that if we can define a future state clearly enough, we can plan our way towards it. That can work when a problem is complicated. It doesn’t hold in a complex environment. If you’ve ever worked in a situation where: - People disagree on what the problem actually is - Interventions create unexpected side effects - The same “solution” works in one place and fails in another - Progress feels real, but hard to explain or predict you’re probably dealing with complexity. This is the work of Dave Snowden and The Cynefin Company, particularly through the Cynefin framework and Snowden’s work on anthrocomplexity. Complex adaptive systems shaped by human sense-making, not just behaviour. In that context, the approach changes. Rather than defining an end state and working backwards, we: - Understand and start from where we are - Run multiple safe-to-fail experiments - Amplify what seems to work - Dampen what doesn’t - Watch for what else emerges Importantly, we run these experiments in parallel. This is where complexity challenges design habits. Design often pushes us toward convergence — finding the best answer as efficiently as possible. In complexity, diversity matters more than optimisation. We might deliberately run experiments we think might fail, as we can’t be certain of the results. And because cause and effect are only clear in the rear view mirror we should expect surprises. I’m barely touching on the depth and breadth of anthrocomplexity here. There’s a substantial body of work behind it. In my practice it doesn’t replace design, strategy or futures thinking. It reframes how and when they’re useful. It’s also a reminder to be careful with familiar models, especially when the system itself is adaptive, complex and uncertain. As Col.     I was in London last month – and an unplanned visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum left an impression on me. The #DesignAndDisability exhibit opened a world of reflections for me, both personal and professional. 🤔 Things I left the exhibit thinking of: → Design makes inclusion visible. The exhibit didn't treat #disability as a "problem to fix". Instead, it surfaced objects and designs that adapt, enhance, and honour difference. A reminder that inclusion isn't about "making space for disability", but about building environments and tools that work for everyone. → Solutions are often simple, but radical in impact. Some of the designs were modest: ergonomic handles, differently shaped tools, adaptive fittings – not flashy "access equipment", but subtle, thoughtful adaptations that make daily life easier. → Diversity is lived, not standardised. The exhibit showed that disability doesn't look the same for every body – and that's actually cool. One person's mobility aid might look nothing like another's sensory adjustment. That diversity requires flexibility, not one-size-fits-all policies. → Empathy can start with design, and then demands culture. We can design accessible objects or spaces, but real inclusion happens when organisations also design for respect and dignity. Adaptation is a (great) start, but understanding and agency should be the goal. Here are some things that this may mean for our workplaces: 1️⃣ Build adaptability into core infrastructure rather than retrofitting design roles, tools, and workflows. Think flexibility from the start: optional hardware/software requests, flexible work hours, non-prescriptive ways to complete tasks. 2️⃣ Ask before assuming. Never guess what someone's needs are. Ask them. Disability and how it shows up are deeply personal. 3️⃣ Normalise workplace adjustments. Make adaptations part of standard provisioning (like chairs, keyboards, headphones). That reduces stigma and ensures accessibility for all, not just those who disclose or fit narrow definitions. 4️⃣ See accessibility as a universal benefit. When we design for the edges, we often catch everyone in between. 5️⃣ Treat inclusion as practice, not a checklist. Accessible buildings or policies are necessary, but not sufficient. There's work to be done in culture and in the willingness to listen and adapt. 💡 When we design teams, tools, and workspaces, it's important we ask: who are we making space for beyond the obvious? 💬 I'd love to hear: what's one design or adjustment you've seen (or implemented) at work – big or small – that made a difference in #accessibility, even if no one asked for it? 🙏🏽 Big thanks to Felix Moise, who recommended visiting the exhibit after we took a Fearless Futures course together!

    What if an interface could adapt to your world in real time? Imagine your car’s dashboard subtly shifting to shades of green as you drive through a forest, or an app adjusting to your personal accessibility needs without breaking. For the past few months, I've spoken with many of you and I’ve realized we’re all working toward the same ambitious goal: creating interfaces that offer a seamless blend of brand personalization, true adaptability, and accessibility. This is about building an experience that is not only true to a brand's perception but is also tailored to our individual needs as consumers. My exploration so far has revealed three foundational concepts that I feel are important to make this a reality. In the upcoming months, I’ll be sharing our journey as we explore these concepts. Some ideas will work, some will fail. I don’t know where this path will lead, but I want to bring you along in the process. 1.⁠ ⁠Contextual Awareness This is the idea that an element understands its environment. A button, for example, knows what surface it’s sitting on and adapts accordingly. While tools like Figma use variable collections to simulate this, the approach is often fragile because it lacks a scalable underlying logic. This very challenge was a driving force behind developing the graph engine. I’m excited to share that a solution for this is now possible directly in modern browsers with pure CSS, laying a powerful and scalable foundation for the future. 2.⁠ ⁠Content Awareness Imagine an interface that reflects the content it displays. We see a version of this in Spotify’s UI, which adapts to album art to create a more immersive experience. This principle allows the UI to react dynamically, personalizing the experience in real-time based on its content. 3.⁠ ⁠User Awareness This pillar brings it all together by focusing on the user’s specific needs. It means designing systems that can respond to a user with Parkinson’s who may need more forgiving interaction areas, or accommodating the universal reality that as we get older, we need larger fonts. The key is to make these adjustments without breaking the interface or compromising the brand experience. These three pillars form the blueprint for the next generation of user interfaces. By understanding where an element is, what it contains, and who is using it, we can create experiences that feel truly alive. I think there’s more to discover beyond our current methods. Just like how our UX team recently redesigned our entire app interface after watching how differently abled users actually interact with their devices. 2. Problem-Solving Without Limits: Fun story: Last month, our team was stuck on a "mandatory" two-handed product design. Then our intern asked, "But what if we didn't assume everyone has hands?" Mind. Blown. 🤯 3. The Power of Different Perspectives: Microsoft's Xbox Adaptive Controller wasn't created by following conventional gaming design - it came from listening to gamers with different abilities. Their sales doubled in unexpected demographics! Recent Innovation: Did you see how Apple's latest iOS update includes back-tapping features? Originally designed for accessibility, now everyone's using it as a productivity hack! 🎯 Key Learning: The most innovative solutions often come from those who can't use traditional ones. 💡 Pro Tip: Next time your team faces a "that's impossible" moment, try this exercise: Remove what you consider your main problem-solving tool. The solutions might surprise you! Real Business Impact: -Curb cuts? Designed for wheelchairs, now essential for everything from strollers to delivery carts -Voice commands? Originally an accessibility feature, now everyone's "Hey Siri-ing" -One-handed keyboards? Here’s how we can rethink architecture in the face of rising temperatures, wild weather, and ecological fragility: 1️⃣ Passive Design Isn't Optional Anymore In regions with extreme heat or cold, passive strategies like cross ventilation, thermal mass, and strategic shading are no longer luxuries—they're survival tools. 🏜️ Consider the windcatchers (badgirs) of Yazd, Iran—ancient systems that naturally cooled interiors centuries before HVAC. 💡 Solution: Orient buildings to maximize shade and airflow. Use materials with high thermal inertia.     The next evolution of design systems isn’t visual. It’s behavioral. We’re moving beyond static component libraries and theme tokens — toward dynamic, intent-aware experience frameworks that adapt to context. Recent Figma updates are accelerating this shift: Variables + Modes — Tokens are no longer just colors or spacing. They’re becoming logic — expressing states like risk=high, density=compact, or mode=investigate. Dev Mode + Code Connect — Design and code now share a single truth, collapsing the gap between “spec” and “ship.” MCP access for AI agents — Agents can now read structured design data, understand context, and even apply changes directly. This opens the door to living systems: - Components that shift tone or density based on risk or urgency. - Layouts that adapt automatically to task context. - Policies that guide what an AI assistant can safely modify. In short: design systems are becoming autonomous frameworks for human-machine collaboration.
