Realigning Career Priorities

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Realigning career priorities means reassessing what matters most in your professional life and intentionally adjusting your path to match your values, goals, and needs. This process helps you break free from autopilot, find greater fulfillment, and make purposeful choices as your life and ambitions evolve.

  • Clarify your direction: Reflect on both what you want and what you no longer need from your work, creating clear boundaries and goals for your next chapter.
  • Connect and learn: Reach out to professionals in fields you’re interested in, have conversations about their experiences, and consider small steps like freelance projects to explore new paths.
  • Embrace change: Accept that career progress often means redefining success and making trade-offs, choosing growth and alignment over staying comfortable but unfulfilled.

Thinking of switching industries or careers?🤷♀️ Pause before you polish that resume. Most people start a career pivot by updating their LinkedIn headline. But the truth is — the real work starts with looking inward. When I speak to professionals in the middle of a transition, I always ask them: Do you know exactly what you’re looking for? Or are you running away from what you don’t want? Here’s how I recommend you approach it: 1) Reflect on your “work happiness formula” * What type of projects make you lose track of time? * Do you prefer building things from scratch or optimising existing systems? * Do you like structured tasks or problem-solving in chaos? 2) Define your non-negotiables -Salary range, work-life balance, growth opportunities, flexibility, values. -Remember: Non-negotiables are boundaries, not wish lists. 3)Understand your ideal environment -Start-up hustle or corporate structure? -Remote independence or in-office collaboration? -Fast-paced change or steady, predictable work? 4)Bridge the skill gap -Identify what’s transferable from your current role. -Pick 1-2 high-impact skills the new industry values and invest in them first. 5) Talk to people, not just job portals -Have informational interviews with folks in your target industry. -Ask them what surprised them most after joining — the answers are gold. A career pivot is less about starting over and more about realigning your career with who you are now — your skills, your values, and your goals. Sometimes the right next step isn’t just up the ladder. It's across What’s one non-negotiable you’d never compromise on in your next role?

7 mindset shifts that help unfulfilled professionals find purpose again (Without changing jobs or sacrificing income) You're exhausted. Burned out. Ready for change. Most people jump ship to a new role. But here's what successful career pivots know: It's not about switching jobs. It's about upgrading your operating system. I've been there. Chasing titles, working harder, waiting for permission. Then I realized: The scenery changed, but the story stayed the same. Here's your new career OS: 1/ Define freedom first ↳ What does "enough" look like for you? ↳ Build your boundaries before burnout forces them 2/ Value-driven decisions ↳ List your non-negotiables ↳ Let them guide your next move 3/ Identity shift ↳ You are not your job title ↳ Your work supports your life, not the other way around 4/ Permission slip ↳ Stop waiting for approval ↳ Start trusting your instincts 5/ Success metrics ↳ Replace external validation with internal alignment ↳ Measure growth, not just gains 6/ Energy management ↳ Work smarter, not just harder ↳ Prioritize recovery as much as performance 7/ Future focus ↳ Design your life first ↳ Let your career serve that vision The best part? This isn't about dramatic exits or risky moves. It's about reclaiming control, one decision at a time. When I first joined Nike, a Senior Director shared wisdom that fundamentally changed how I approach career decisions: "Always be clear about what you're optimizing for. Is it money, work-life balance, or knowledge?" This simple question has become my compass at every professional crossroads: • There's no universal "right choice" - only the right choice for your current priorities. During some seasons, skill development might outweigh compensation. In others, flexibility might be non-negotiable. • Your optimization target will naturally evolve. Early in my career, I optimized relentlessly for knowledge, taking roles that expanded my skillset even when the hours were demanding. Today, my equation looks different. • Being honest about your priorities prevents resentment. When I've chosen roles knowing they required tradeoffs, I've found peace with those compromises. • The clarity this framework provides makes difficult decisions surprisingly straightforward. When faced with multiple options, I ask: "Which aligns with what I'm optimizing for right now?" I've found that the most fulfilled professionals aren't those who "have it all" simultaneously but those who intentionally choose what matters most in each chapter of their career.

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭: 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 Most professionals put their careers in cruise control mode at the first sight of initial success and a comfortable lifestyle. The steady paycheck, predictable schedule, and recognition create a false sense of security. Then comes the awakening—that mid-career moment when you realize you've been circling the same loop for years. The growth has stagnated, boredom has settled in, and somehow, without your consent, someone else has assigned a ceiling to your potential. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡: According to a longitudinal study by Harvard Business Review, 76% of mid-career professionals report feeling "stuck" by age 45, with nearly half experiencing what researchers call "purpose deficit disorder"—high functioning but low fulfillment. How does one pivot from this all-too-common scenario? 1. Reclaim your career narrative: Career stagnation often begins with surrendering your story to external definitions of success. Research from Stanford's Career Development Center shows that professionals who deliberately articulate their own definition of success are 3.4 times more likely to report high career satisfaction. Start by asking: "What would success look like if I were the only one defining it?" 2. Create strategic discomfort: Neuroscience confirms that our brains build the strongest new neural pathways when challenged just beyond our comfort zone. This isn't about radical reinvention but intentional stretching. Commit to one "growth task" weekly that makes you slightly uncomfortable—whether volunteering for that cross-functional project or finally having coffee with that industry leader you admire. 3. Leverage the mid-career advantage: As management theorist Peter Drucker noted, "The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." Your years of experience have equipped you with pattern recognition that younger professionals simply don't possess. Document your implicit knowledge and unique perspectives—they're often your most marketable assets. 4. Build a transition portfolio: Rather than making dramatic leaps, successful career pivoters create what I call a "transition portfolio"—small, strategic investments in their future direction while maintaining their current position. This might include selective freelance projects, board positions, or specialized certifications. As I explore in my book #CareersUnleashed, extraordinary careers are not built on luck—they're built on intentional strategies and mindset shifts. When the speed of change around you exceeds the speed of change within you, you become irrelevant. But by taking ownership of your career journey, you can break free from the loop and unleash your true professional potential. What default career pattern will you challenge this week? #CareerTransformation #ProfessionalGrowth #CareersUnleashed #careers #Jobs

This is for you if you’re struggling to successfully change CAREERS. Maybe you’ve spent years in one field, but now it feels like you’re forcing it. You’re not challenged anymore. You don’t feel proud when someone asks what you do. And yet, the thought of starting over feels overwhelming. 📌Changing careers means learning how to pivot with purpose. Here’s how to make the shift without starting from scratch or burning out: 1. Get clear on what you want and what you’re done with. - Don’t just run from your current job. Know what you’re running toward. - Make two lists: the things you want more of in your next role… and the things you won’t tolerate again. 2. Identify your transferable skills. - You’re not beginning at zero. - Look for roles or industries where what you’ve already mastered is still valuable. 3. Start small before going big. - Test your interest in a new path through freelancing, certifications, side projects, or part-time learning. - This helps you build confidence and proof before making a big leap. 4. Update your network, not just your resume. - Talk to people in the space you want to move into. - Ask about their path. Offer value. Show curiosity. - Many career changes happen through conversations not job boards. 5. Redefine what “starting over” means. - You might earn less at first. You might not have all the answers. - But you’re choosing alignment over autopilot and that’s a powerful trade. ------------ Changing careers is uncomfortable but staying stuck is painful. You don’t have to figure it all out overnight. You just have to stop convincing yourself that it’s too late. P.S If you’re in the middle of a career change, what’s been your biggest struggle so far? #CareerChange #CareerTransition #MidCareerMoves #Reinvention #TransferableSkills #LifeAfterCorporate #CareerCoaching.

Lost the spark in your current role? It happens even to the most driven professionals. But you can reignite your excitement by realigning your work with what truly matters to you. Here’s how to do a quick values and purpose check-in: ✅ Reflect on your best days at work. What were you doing? Who were you helping? Look for patterns that light you up. ✅ List your top personal values, maybe it’s growth, creativity, service, or balance. Are these showing up in your daily work? ✅ Ask yourself: What kind of impact do I want to have? Does your current role give you opportunities to make that difference? ✅ Identify one small change you can make this week: volunteer for a project, mentor a colleague, or set a new goal that aligns with your values. ✅ Revisit your “why.” Write down what motivates you and keep it visible as a daily reminder. 💡 When your work matches your values, motivation follows. Realignment doesn’t always mean a big leap; sometimes it’s small, intentional shifts that bring back your spark. What’s one value you want to see more of in your work? Drop it below, let’s inspire each other to wake up excited again. If this resonated, please like, share, or repost ♻️ to help others rediscover their spark. #NeoHRUS #CareerCoach #LinkedIn

This year, let your career decisions be guided by more than just money. Compensation matters. But you know what else matters at work? 🌱 Career Growth 👥 Company culture and team dynamics ⚖️ Work–life balance and flexibility 🛡️ Psychological safety and trust 🤝🏾 Supportive Manager 👏🏾 Recognition and Appreciation 🎁 Benefits and Perks 🚀 Mission and Values Alignment 📈 Clear expectations and growth paths 🌍 Inclusivity, belonging, and respect 🔁 Stability, transparency, and change communication 🧩 Autonomy and ownership over your work I've personally experienced the consequences of solely prioritizing money over other equally important factors in my career decisions. Your career is about more than a paycheck. It’s about how you’re treated. How you’re developed. How supported you feel during change. And how sustainable your life feels while doing the work. This year, seek out environments that support your growth, protect your well-being, and align with who you’re becoming, not just what you earn.

Your body knows you’re in a misaligned job before your mind does. I had a job so misaligned with my values that my body rejected it even before I walked out the door to head to the office. Pain in my gut, tightness in my neck, and a heavy dread walking out the door every morning. And for months, I pushed through the resistance to show up daily: -Dragging myself into the office -Taking bathroom breaks to release the tears -Lunch breaks sitting in my car, just to get some breathing space With my wisdom now, I can recognize that my body was giving me powerful warning signals. And that experience (and others on my career journey) taught me how important it is for our values to align with our work and environment. That misalignment showed up in more ways than just physical symptoms. Looking back, I can now catch the patterns, and I see them in nearly every client who comes to me feeling stuck. For many of my clients, remote work becomes the catalyst for realignment. It creates space to reconnect with yourself and what truly matters. Here are 3 signs your career is misaligned and how to realign: 1. Values misalignment Feel like you’re compromising your soul every day at work? Your core values likely clash with leadership or company culture. 💡 Tip: Reconnect with your core values, and see if there is any opportunity for you to work in harmony.  Can you change roles/departments? If not, start looking elsewhere. 2. You’ve lost the spark You feel like you’re sleepwalking through the day? No passion left. You’re counting hours, living for weekends. 💡 Tip: Reconnecting with passion is reconnecting with yourself. When did you last feel energized by your work? What were you doing? Make a list of activities that make you lose track of time. Can you integrate more of these into your role? 3. Constant burnout You can barely get through the day, yet you’re working late nights and weekends?  Your health, relationships, and well-being are suffering. 💡 Tip: BOUNDARIES. Stop overextending and say no to what is outside the bounds of your role, log out, and protect your recharge time. No job is worth sacrificing your health. I wish someone had told me these signs years ago. It would have saved me months of tears in bathroom stalls and Sunday night dread. If you’re reading this and thinking ‘this is literally my life right now’... I see you. I’ve been exactly where you are. I created a career fulfillment quiz to help you figure out what’s at the root of your unhappiness. Sometimes we know we’re miserable but need help pinpointing why. 🔗 Link in comments. #CareerAlignment #CareerFulfillment #RemoteWork #CareerTransition

  • Thinking about making a career move this year? After nearly two decades in talent acquisition and now running my own recruiting firm, here are a few things I consistently see make a real difference for job seekers: Get clear on what you actually want. Before applying, take time to define what matters most: growth, leadership, culture, flexibility, compensation. A clear direction leads to better decisions. Tell your story, not just your title. Resumes (and interviews) that focus on impact, results, and why you do what you do stand out every time. Don’t underestimate relationships Some of the best opportunities come from conversations—not applications. Reach out, reconnect, and let people know what you’re exploring. Be prepared to explain your “why”. Hiring leaders care about motivation. Why this move? Why now? Confidence comes from clarity. Think beyond the next role. The best career moves align with where you want to be in 3–5 years—not just what you want to leave behind. I’m a big believer that careers aren’t built by accident, they’re built with intention, courage, and the right support.

Your career should empower you, not drain you. But how do we align our professional lives with this mindset? Here are some tips to reclaim balance and focus on what truly matters: 1️⃣ Define what success means to you. →Is it about financial security, growth opportunities, or meaningful impact? →When you’re clear on your values, you’re less likely to sacrifice your well-being for external pressures. 2️⃣ Set boundaries that protect your energy. →Working late every night or saying “yes” to everything isn’t sustainable. →Be intentional about your limits. →Protect your time for rest, relationships, and personal growth—those are non-negotiable. 3️⃣ Focus on the why behind your work. →Do you see your work as a steppingstone toward your goals? →Or is it just a cycle of tasks with no fulfillment? →Reflect on whether your current role aligns with your purpose. 4️⃣ Advocate for yourself. →If your workload or environment feels overwhelming, speak up. →Your mental and physical health are more valuable than any paycheck. →Leaders who prioritize empathy and communication will value your honesty. 5️⃣ Reassess and adjust. → Every few months, ask yourself: Am I thriving or just surviving? →If it’s the latter, it might be time for a change. Your career should be a means to support the life you want. Not a trade-off for your happiness. You deserve more than just a paycheck. You deserve a life that energizes and fulfills you.
