A note on the RTÉ Radio 1 rebrand in 2026
The Freedom of Information Act is limited in its application to RTÉ arising from Statutory Instrument 115/2000. The Act only applies to ‘non programme related’ records which is in keeping with the requirements in Irish and international law for a free press. This approach was specifically endorsed by the High Court in the case of RTÉ v The Information Commissioner.
As such, records relating to the recent rebranding of RTÉ Radio 1, including its new audio identity, are not subject to the legislation.
This is because the entire process was editorial in nature – essentially it was an editorial decision what the new ‘sound’ of RTÉ Radio 1 should be.
However, despite the fact the records relating to the process are not releasable under FOI, the Director General has committed to RTÉ being as open and transparent as possible. Arising from this it has been decided to release some details of the cost involved in the project outside of the FOI Act.
The initial costs incurred at the launch of the rebrand were approximately €35,762. The new identity provided new signature tunes across the entire RTÉ Radio 1 schedule from news bulletins, programmes, continuity, weather, sport as well as traffic and travel. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra was involved in performing the key elements of the new identity.
