Right now, there is no way for users to contact each other privately. There were cases where I am communicating to an individual on a public thread in a random post, which takes a lot of space.
The current solution right now is creating a post "mailbox" where other people can send in messages and reply to them appropriately. However, this can be a risk because of what if they want to connect with someone on discord or LinkedIn, but they are not conformable doing it publicly and that they don't have it on their dev.to profile.
If a recruiter on dev.to is interested in a specific candidate on dev.to, the recruiter should allow to privately direct message to the user without having to either comment on a post publicly (which can be seen as spam nowadays) or in email (which can be heavily skeptical since there is no way to verify.) By doing so, it will allow the user on dev.to to:
- See the dev.to profile to determine its legitimacy based on if they are part of a org and is verified by dev.to specifically (seen in the MLH org that has a check mark)
- Used as a cross reference IF it is the case they message on dev.to and email to the user to validate.
- Being able to private message to each other on dev.to without having to go on a different platform to do so and not needing to comment publicly. Creates convenience.
Describe the solution you'd like
Create a mail box icon on the top right of the navigation bar for all users.
- A feature where they can select the user to contact privately.
- Once they select a user, both users can contact each other with Markdown support.
- Have the ability to create a group chat.
Settings to consider:
- Allow users to enable/disable messages FROM ANYONE. If they disable this feature, users can only message the individual if both are following each other.
- Allow users to show their online status or not.
For moderation, have moderators have access to reported messages. Leaving flexibility based on your needs @benhalpern
